I just bought a 53 Chevy. The brake lights (2) do not work. Where do I start to resolve?
Also, I pulled the seats out and cleaned inside the cab. After I finished, I noticed that the small light on the blinker handle stayed lighted after I turned the key off. I know that would drain the battery, so I pulled a wire off the battery. The key switch seems to be a little loose and have a different nut on the face. Maybe I frigged up the switch? Does anybody have a closeup picture of the key switch?

#87091 05/21/2002 5:21 PM | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 | Check the brake switch on the lower part of the firewall in the engine compartment.It is mounted on the firewall and the brake pedal arm holds it in the off position.They sometimes stick.
Pull the brake pedal arm and see if the switch lever moves.If it is stuck, it may be able to work free and losen up so it works.
.I have found several that way.
There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

#87092 05/21/2002 7:55 PM | Joined: Jul 2000 Posts: 504 Member | | Member Joined: Jul 2000 Posts: 504 | With that brake light switch in the off position ( against the firewall ) there should be power to one side of the switch. You may have to turn on the key to power it. When the brake is depressed and the arm swings away and activates the switch, power is sent through the other side of the switch and back to the brake lights.
If the switch checks out OK, follow the wire back to the rear along the inside of the frame. You may have a break in the wire or a bad connection. Also be sure the bulb sockets are clean and the bulbs are good. Check the grounding of the tail light housing as well..

#87093 05/30/2002 2:08 PM | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 101 | Found out the problem with the brake lights. On the motor side of the firewall, the two wires were off of the terminals. Pluged them in and brake lights worked.
Now that I think about it, that was about the time I noticed that the blinker light on the blinker handle started staying on. Maybe that was why the brake light wires were off from the previous owner.
