It's been a while since I've been on. Finally to the point that I need to get a fuel tank for my 62' fleetside (8ft) and I want to put it under the bed. Are there any tanks that will drop in? Can the last crossmember be moved rearward to provide more room for a larger tank without affecting the structural integrity? Any suggestions?

i put a underbed one on my 63 and my 64. i didn't have to move any of the larger crossmembers or anything like that. i got a poly kit off ebay for one, and a steel tank from lmc for the other one. both were around $200 several years back. i have heard of people using junk yard tanks, but since i had just rebuilt the engine on both of mine, i didn't want to take that chance.

The tank kits are decent, but the filler neck solution hasn't been tweeked. With the tank in the highest position, it encroaches on the cross sill and doesn't allow a transition, adequate to allow fueling without setting the pump handle at the first click. With it flanged to the bottom of the frame rail, as designed, it is a few inches lower, than is desireable. In any case, there are a few trade-offs, when going the underbed tank route.

We Just installed LMC's tank in our 64- still need to work out the filler issue- Really don't want to go with the bed mounted filler ( like a boat filler port) the crossmember / rail interferrence issue is certainly a big part of the equasion... when we move forward I'll post more pics.

Well, thanks for the useful information. I do need to add, the 62 frame is considerably different. There are 2 crossmembers just rearward of the axle. They are only 12 inches apart and roughly 15 inches from the 2nd crossmember to the frame end. This was my problem in locating a tank to fit. But I have, I'm installing an aluminum fuel cell, 30long x 12wide x 9high. Roughly 15 gallons and should provide an ideal fill point in the bed floor. Once I get it installed I'll share some photos.
