Finally got enough parts together to fire up my 383 sbc yesterday! Engine was built for a bracket racing car but I was assured in would be a streetable engine. I also purchased an Edelbrock tripower set up with early 2 barrel Rochesters, both guys said they would be around when I started it up. Fast forward 3 years, both guys are no longer in the area and I am trying to make this thing run. Engine cranked and fired right away on the center carb only. Got the timing set, adjusted the float for a slight flooding issue and went to adjust the idle mixture screws. From what I have read you start at 3 turns out and adjust to 2 to 1 1/2 turns. This thing wont even try to idle unless I am out 3 1/2 turns. The cam in this thing is a thumper, I dont think It wants to idle at less that 1000 RPM. Do the idle screws adjust fuel? is it OK to run them out for a high idle? I am currently using the choke cam to set the linkage up so it idles at 1000 RPM. Any input would be great. Thanks Boltbuster

Sounds like you have too much cam. Set the initial timing to about 12-14 degrees. Get a vacuum advance that comnes in at a low vacuum & hook the vacuum line to manifold vacuum.

The carb shop stuff is very helpfull. I sealed off the inlets to the out board carbs and got the idle adjusted pretty well. Only 6 lbs of vac. at 850 RPM, the cam is real lumpy. I drove it for the first time tonight, it runs pretty good! Got to sort out the steering and brakes. Any street engine with that much cam is going to be as irritating as a sandpaper girdle! Tripower carbs will simply add to the aggravation.

Fixed a couple of leaks and alinged the front end a bit more and took it out on the road. It pulls like a mule, 20 years ago I would have been grinning ear to ear but I am sure it will get old.
