I'm going to put original 16" steel rims back on my 1948 Chevy 1/2 ton. Can anybody tell me what size radial tires will fit on 16" x (5.5"?) rims and come close to the diameter of the stock bias-ply tires?

215x85x16 is the closest modern size you will find.
Coker tire does offer a 600 or a 6.50x16 radial that is very close to the profile of a similar bias ply tire is is the same size.

Diamondback tires offers a 195/80/16 white or black which is about the closest you'll find domestically. The cross section is quite a bit wider than the 600x16 but unless you buy Coker's classic bias or radial it's the best you'll do. <PAGE 22> In Europe you can get a 185/85/16 that is closer still but still a wider cross section.
