I think about buying one, not this one, just in case since the old 261 behaves a bit odd. And if I see it has a blown head gasket it will go out at least temporarily. IS there any options for putting a 350 in ? Since they are more than common and easy to find a used one for no money.

It will need the 3-bolt starter that bolts to the bellhousing, not the engine block and a large-diameter flywheel (don't remember the tooth count offhand).
You might have to fabricate front motor mounts and clutch linkage to make everything work, plus the exhaust system. As long as you don't go too big on the engine size, the radiator you have now should work OK. A 396, 427, or 454 might require more cooling, but up to a 350 should be OK.

| | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,212 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,212 | Ulf, As HL said any SBC will bolt right in. I have a 350 in my 1956 Tow Truck and it runs great. You will need the V8 motor mounts sold by all of the vendors (same as the pickup trucks). The clutch linkage will work, it might need to be adjusted a little and you'll need the V8 throttle linkage. The radiator will need to be moved back about 5" or you'll need a deep fan shroud. You also need to change the ignition switch to one that has the "start" position as you will loose the foot start when you convert. The rest is just normal re-working the electric, exhaust, vacuum and fuel lines. You will be happy with a 350...lots of power and faster speed. The Bell Housing will need the dust shield (two pieces, bottom and front). Mike B  | | |
