I found a nice gauge cluster in a GMC AD in the local juckyard. I needed the 60 psi oil pressure gauge for my new 261 but left ammeter and gas gauge because of the polarity difference between the GMC and my '48 Chev.

Can the ammeter and gas gauge be used with some tricks, such as wiring things up backwards?

(If I go back and get the rest, I'll bargain them down because some idiot already took the oil pressure gauge!)

Just switch the wires on the GMC ammeter to use in a Chevy truck. Note that the background color and needle colors are different than Chev.

I don't know about the gas gauge, but should be the same deal..........

Just a note- the '54 chevy oil pressure gauge has the same guts but a differant back (and 60 psi) as the earlier gauge. I just drilled out the rivets on mine and riveted the old face on the new gauge, and didn't have to repaint the needle.

I don't know if the gas gauge will work or not. If it has a permanent magnet in it it may deflect the wrong way, but it won't hurt it to try it out if you keep it below 6 volts.
