Some of you may remember the oil burning problem I had with the original engine in my truck. I finally gave up on it and got a remanufactured 235. I installed it over the long weekend and it fired right up. I ran it at about 2000 RPMs for the first 20 minutes with oil for diesel engines in the crankcase. No leaks anywhere. The timing was practically dead-on, too. Afterward, I set the timing and the idle and it's beautiful. A world of difference from the old one. I also had the flywheel resurfaced and got new clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. All I have to do is figure out my clutch adjustment and I can drive.

Now what's next?

I have to get weatherstripping on the doors, get the wiper motor fixed, and I'm ready to take some long trips. I'm going to run it around town first and get the rings seated and make sure nothing's going to break, leak, burn up, etc.

OK, here's your next break-in procedure, piston ring seating. According to the packing slip included with every Perfect Circle ring set I ever installed, they reccomend doing 10 full-throttle accelerations from 30 MPH to 50 MPH in high gear on level ground. This loads the rings against the cylinder walls and promotes quick ring seating. After that, they claim no further break-in is needed. I'd still reccomend an oil and filter change somewhere in the first 500 to 1,000 miles.

So, once you get to 30 MPH, just stomp on it until you get to 50? My speedo is way off, so I might see if I can rig up a GPS.
Charles, I got my engine at United Engine Specialists in Wichita, KS. I asked around about their reputation and got good reports. The guys on the HAMB knew who they were and the ones from KS said the company was reputable. They've been in business for 50 years. It arrived strapped to an oak pallet and shrink wrapped. So far, so good, but anything can happen, I suppose.

One tip for the door seals. You can put them on wrong. I did on one side of my 1949. Pay real good attention to how they go or you will have door problems. I put the black sealer on mine and guess what? I had to buy another set of door seals. You just about can't get them off without tearing them up. They don't sell them for one door. At least I couldn't find anyone whoe did. I've made a ton of mistakes and I try to share mine so other people won't do the same. Good luck and glad the engine is running good.

The exact speeds aren't particularly important. Just give the engine several full-load accelerations to load the rings and help them burnish themselves into ful contact with the cylinder walls. Other than that procedure, ring seating doesn't take anything other than normal driving. Try to avoid sustained high speeds or long periods of lugging, wwhere the vehicle speed doesn't increase with added throttle opening.

I have just found myself in the position of needing an engine and saw your post. I have a 1941 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 216. If I change to a 235 as you did what do I need to buy besides the engine...Motor mounts, carb, Oil filter and housing ect to do the install?

The place that built my engine provides an oil pan and a timing cover, but you have to supply everything else. They do send you all the gaskets you will need, so you wouldn't have to get those. Pretty much everything that came off my old engine went back on the new one.
It's a great time to replace your clutch, too, if it needs replacing. Motor mounts are a good idea, too.

Idid call them and they sound like they have a good product.
I pulled the head off last night and found a bent pushrods but no damage to the valve or piston so I think I will try to find someone who can do a valve job and replace my broken rocker arm. If anyone know of a good place near Fremont Ca. Please let me know.
