Speedometer cable isn't turning on my 42 1/2 ton - 4 speed. Cable (new) doesn't seem to have anything to engage into at the transmission end. Took off the sleeve nut that the cable housing screws into and see this split tube sticking out. Nothing there that appears to be a female receiver for the square end of the cable. What the heck am I missing?

I don't have photos to show you, hope I can describe it well enough.
There should be a short fitting with male threads at each end and a hex in the middle that threads into the housing shown and provides a thread for the knurled ring fitting on the end of the cable to attach to. It looks as if you are missing the double ended threaded adapter part.
The cable end should have a swaged end that is round except for a small ear on one side that fits into the groove in the shiny tube of your photo (OD of the cable fitting = ID of your shiny tube).

Thanks guys. It sounds to me like the new cable I got needs to have what Grant indentifies as "swaged end that is round except for a small ear." I don't seem to have anything that fits into the groove in the shiny tube. Is that a separate part?

Thanks again,
Rusty
