I was told to check the bottom of the lifter. If it has bars across, it's likely hydraulic. If it has a C clip, it's solid. However, my lifters looked nothing like either of those descriptions, so it could be hard to tell just by eyeballing it. If you don't want to physically inspect them from the side plate, you could try this route which I'm quoting from another website: Hydraulic Lifters have approx. .060 of "squish" in them. . . Solids do not. . .
With the engine off. . .yank a rocker cover off of it. . .. find a rocker that is somewhere in the down position. . . not in the up position.
Loosen it up until the rocker is barely making contact with the valve. Then tighten the rocker nut down, ever-so-slowly. . . . If the pushrod moves down a little (approx. .060) before the valve starts to move, Wa-la. . .. Hydraulic Lifters. .. . .
If the pushrod does "not" move. . . but the valve starts to move. . . Aha !!! All car 235s from 1956 and onwards came with hydraulic lifters. Prior to 1956, only Powerglide-equipped car engines has hydraulic lifters.
The physical characteristics given above are probably incorrect. The "squish" test given above is often recommended.

Find a valve that's closed, not open, and put a hard push on the rocker arm with a pry bar, trying to move the pushrod back toward the lifter. After a minute or two of constant pressure, a gap will develop between the tip of the rocker arm and the valve stem, sometimes as much as 1/4". The oil trapped in the lifter body squeezes out slowly, allowing the rocker to back away from the valve stem. As soon as the engine starts, the oil pressure will cause the lifter to refill. The compressed lifter will clatter for a couple of minutes, then finally it will refill itself and the noise will go away.
A solid lifter will not allow a gap to develop, no matter how long the pressure is held on the rocker arm. Jerry
