The problem is, it is located so that if I actually had a mast on the base, the hood would rip it off as soon as I raised the hood. The base is located on the passenger side just to the right of the winshield wiper are mount. Again, when the hood goes up,it would definitely bend the antenna. Am I nuts? Is the right location for the antenna or is the base for soemthing else? If for something else, then what??

If you have the stock-type antenna, there is a bracket under the dash that attaches to the side panel. The hole for the self-tapping screw ("L" in the drawing below) was drilled at the factory. If I drill the hole according to the template they provided it looks like the hood will hit it. Looking at the bezel, it has a flat side, should this be flush with the raised portion of the cowl? It would then clear the hood. I'm ready to mount it, if I set the bezel flat side with the rubber gasket flush to the raised portion of the cowl, only using the template to get the distance from the mirror arm, mark the inside of the hole with a magic marker and drill, will I be making a mistake?

Is your antenna from LMC an original-style antenna? There is another discussion of this topic in the Paint & Body Shop Forum - with a photo of the template/instructions and a photo of an installed antenna:

If you drill the hole as shown in the template, the bezel (and seal) will ride up a little on the "belt" on the cowl (at the cowl crease-line, labelled on the template).
You are correct to be concerned - drilling a hole is a "point of no return.

It's an original style antenna. Their template puts the hole 1/2" (measuring parallel to the truck centerline) from the raised portion of the cowl, the small flat on the bezel wouldn't touch it. My measurement puts the hole 1/4" from the raised protion of the cowl in what looks to be the correct spot, and well clear of the hood.
What's the best way to drill it? I only have bits up to 1/2" and planned to grind it the rest of the way.

Templates look to be the same, but lines are much thicker on mine. What is the distance to the mirror arm? I get 1 1/2", measured along the horizontal line.

The distance from the center of the antenna hole is 1 7/8" (1 13/16"?) to the edge of the mirror bracket and the distance from the edge of the hole is 1 1/2"to the edge of the mirror bracket.

I drilled the hole, edge is 1 1/2" up from the mirror bracket. I positioned it so the bezel and gasket touch the raised portionon the cowl. Antenna looks good, and the hood clears it. But there's a problem. The lower bracket hits the electrical relay I mounted for the aftermarket fuse panel. Once I relocate that I'm home free.
