Hi all, I'm a newbie member but have been using great tips from the forums for the past year. My '55 235 has been apart since last August and I'm finally starting to put it back together. Two questions about rods: 1) Upon assembly, are the wrist pin pinch bolts oriented toward the camshaft side of the engine or the non-camshaft side? and 2) What are the pinch bolts supposed to be torqued to? I've read before that the shop manuals say they're supposed to be "tightened" but don't give a value. What do experienced engine builders torque them to? Thanks in advance for your help, Dale

Your answer is on this page. Engine assembly This is for 55 2nd but I don't believe the information changes. I believe that your pistons have a proper front and back orientation to them.

Terrific! I've added the shop manual to my favorites for future reference. That clears up the connecting rod orientation issue. Any experienced builders have any recommended pinch bolt torque value? Thanks in advance, Dale

I believe the bolt is a 3/8"-24 which would be tightened to 30-35 ft.-lb. or so. Be aware it's possible to put a twist in the connecting rod while tightening the pinch bolt if the rod is held in a vise while the bolt is being tightened. Find a pin punch that's a close fit into the hole in the wrist pin, clamp it into a vise, and slide the pin over the punch to anchor the piston/rod assembly while the pinch bolt is torqued.
