Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 222 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2007 Posts: 222 | Replaced the fuel line and pump on a 49, 216 engine and now I have a horrendous fuel leak somewhere at or near the carburetor. It does not leak when it's cranking over, only when the engine starts and then it showers out at or near the carb so bad that I have to shut it down before I can locate the leak, I'm deathly afraid of having a fire it's leaking so bad. It's a newer rebuilt carb, could something be leaking on it all of a sudden? Thanks for the help

Float setting wrong. Fuel pump pumping too many PSI's.(as in: wrong pump) Vacuum leak. Needle fell off hanger or set wrong. Loose fittings/hose clamp, broken/cracked hose, etc. Throttle shaft leak, mis-assembled accelerator pump. There, that narrows it down for ya. You really, really need to define to us where it is leaking. Start with dry carb, extra person, powerful light, a mirror for the rear and a fire extinguisher. "Showers out" ???? Big leak? Of course the big question is when did it start? After rebuild carb? Right After new line and pump? When did it not leak? I know nothing about 216's but have had those kinds of leaks. The 216 boys will know better.
Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it. - William Penn | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 | I have had this happen a couple of times, and it had to do with the carburetor float and needle valve. The first time it happened I had put on a new fuel pump, and missed the fact that the old pump had a filter, and the new one did not. This resulted in a piece of trash getting caught in the needle valve, and the carb then overflowed with gas. Second time was when a hole developed in the float, it "sank" and too much gas in the carb again..
Other typical place to have a leak on the rochester B carb is at the fuel fitting in the body of the carb. The fitting won't seal at the carb because the pot metal of the carb has become damaged. Teflon tape will not help or can make the problem worse. Easy fix is to "glue" the fitting in place with a thread locker of epoxy.
