Can you remove a short fleetside bed from a 55 to 59 and rplace it with a stepside ?

Are the cabs and frames all the same? I'm looking at a nice short fleetside, with a rotted bed and prefer the stepside. I know its not the purest, but I had to ask the question. When my old plumber boss was stumped he used to say- Well lets do something, even if its wrong.
