Hey everyone, I need help removing an ignition cylinder from my 1961 Chevrolet Apache 10. I cannot get the ignition cylinder nut off all the way without the bezel of the ignition cylinder stopping it. How do I get it off without damaging the cylinder? I'd like to get the 4 digit code off of it and get it re-keyed, if possible. Worst case scenario, I will replace it, but I'll still need to get the old one out. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There is a hole in the face of the cylinder, stick a paper-clip in the hole & press down. You will feel a spring, with the key inserted turn the cylinder anti-clockwise & pull out.

Well, I don't have the key. I can turn it from off to run to start and use it normally, but I don't have a key.

I think you have to turn it to "acc" to put a paper clip in the hole and that would be hard to do without the key, maybe Tony will chime in on this, he is full of all kinds of neat tricks, Now Tony get out of Dagwoods and help this guy out LOL

A previous post discussed this and the "ACC" position wasn't available on stock trucks untill 1967 thumbs_up

I had to carefully grind the ears off to remove the nut. I didn't have a key for mine either.

I have several trucks with the acc position. I believe spare parts is correct on turning it that way with the paper clip in. If you can turn it you may be able to remove it with that trick. If not remove the door lock cylinder and take it in to the lock smith and have a key cut for it and hopefully it hasnt been changed and is the same as the ignition.
