When shift from a high gear back to first I have to do so when stooped otherwise it grids. Is this the way its supposed to work and if not what do you think is wrong? Thanks

There was no syncro on 1st gear in Chevys till 1968. You have to stop to put it in 1st or double clutch it. To do this put the clutch in & shift to neutral. Let the clutch out & accelerate the engine to the aprox. RPM it will be turning when you are in first gear. Then push the clutch in & shift to 1st. With a little practice you can do this smoothly with little or no clash. It will wow your freinds. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. For downshifting, give the accelerator a little pop to unload the gears and shift to nuetral, then match engine speed to what the next gear down shoud be doing at that speed, and slide right into the gear. No clutch necessary, but it does take confidence.
For upshifting, just run up to where you normally shift, bring it into neutral, let the engine speed fall to where it should be at that speed for the next gear, and slide right into gear. The synchros will help a bit. Just be sensitive to the feel of it.
Try this at your own risk, of course.
