You may have to mod the throttle linkage. If you're sticking with the stock tranny, you may need a different flywheel/pressure plate. It won't be a simple slap her in deal, it will take some swapping of parts. It's not that hard, you just need all the proper stuff to go with it.

| | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 787 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 787 | 230 eng perches will work quite fine, just move to the rear holes. the 230 b/housing, flywheel and clutch will all work. believe that there is a difference though in balancing; whether the flywheel is internal or external balanced to the 400 sbc eng ?? ron
it is the 292 i6 eng perch that is different on the right side

I put a 350 from a 1975 in its place. I know the 3 speed will bolt right up to it without moving it at all. I also used the same clutch assembly (I was not worried about racing). I can't remember but if I recall my 350 was from a manual truck so it's existing flywheel worked. I used the motor mounts from a 66 V8 that was in a boneyard. You will have to do some exhaust work one way or the other. I just ran a new dual exhaust. I tried running the original radiator but didn't trust the cooling capacity so before summer came on full I updated to a V8 radiator. Depending on the motor that you are putting in you will have to modify some of the electrical. Mine had an HEI so that was part of the process. Also, if you have power steering/brakes you will have to account for it as well. That sounds like a lot and it is. They need a counterweighted flywheel (or flexplate) for proper engine balance. Take the crank from your 400 and find a cheap 350 4 bolt block. You won't run into issues with cylinder heads etc., will end up with 383 ci for just a little more machine shop costs. If you're replacing pistons etc., your parts bill will be less by going with a 4 inch bore. Just my opinion. | | |
