I was told I need to make sure and add shims if needed on the starter when I install it.
My question is can I test fit the starter and determine the shim requirements while everything is easy to get to now before installing everything in the car? Can I bolt the flywheel to the torque converter and flex plate to the transmission then install the starter amd converter and then check the clearance without bolting the engine up. If someone could walk me though this it would be appreciated. The ones that bolt to the block near the oil pan rail sometimes need to be shimmed to avoid the starter pinion teeth bottoming out in the flywheel teeth. A good way to check tooth engagement is to spray-paint the pinion gear teeth, then spin the starter for several seconds with the ignition disabled and see how far down in the tooth the paint gets rubbed off.
