Howdy fellow bolters! I've got a quick question regarding the oil bath air cleaner on my 53 6400's 235. On the (for lack of a better word) lid of the air cleaner there is a steel fitting that comes up and turns 90 degrees and faces back toward the fire wall. It looks like a vacuum hose or something goes on it but the motor has no PCV valve. My dad and I thought it might go to the rubber hose that runs through the firewall and into the cowl vent, but it was just a guess. Anybody else run into an OBAC like this or have any ideas? Thanks for the help!

Jake,

I don't know where this fitting attaches, but I do know it doesn't connect to the drip tube from the cowl vent.

It's possible that this air cleaner was originally on a different rig that had some sort of crank case breather system.

Stuart,
Good thing you told me what that cowl tube was for. It really would've sucked if it was still attached to the air cleaner and the cowl was open during a good rain...*shudder*. Thanks for the info on the fitting!

That's probably the "clean air" fitting that was attached to a hydrovac brake booster. I've seen some of the hydrovac brake systems with about a 3/4" or 1" hose attached to the breather to prevent dusty air from entering the brake booster.

That air cleaner was proably on a motor that had a pvc system and would have connected to the valve cover. SEC 0 SHEET 4.00 of factory assembly manual

Jake,

I'll bet if you look behind your seat you will see a tube coming up through the floor. It has a small air cleaner affair on its end. It's the breather from the atmosphere side of the hydrovac.

If you can't see it, you can hear it! With the truck shut off you can pump the brakes and hear it 'huff'.

If wouldn't seem like they would plumb this into the carburetor as it might tend to provide a little vacuum, and this side of the brake diaphragm is suppose to be neutral. Does this sound right?

Denny,
That air cleaner is nearly a spot-on match to what I've got sitting on top of my 235. If it was indeed for a newer hydrovac I'll jut block it off and go about my business. Thanks for the input, everyone!

That fitting was designed for a PCV system as
Beaver 53 posted.
