I picked up a 12 bolt last weekend for my 40 3/4 ton.

I cracked it open and found out that it has 3.07 gears. This is great luck since I can use a Saginaw behind my 292 rather than figuring out an o/d.

But there's this oil tube that feeds into the top of the center section. What is that for?

Obviously all of my old 40 torque tubes didn't have anything like that.

That's probably a vent tube that's supposed to end up somewhere inside the frame. A lot of 4WD's had an extended vent system so dummies could go stream-fording without sucking up water into the axle vents.

Yep, that's the housing vent. Route it up inside a frame rail, secure it with a couple of zip ties with built-in screw holes, and cover the end with a bit of window screen to keep bugs from nesting in the end of the tube.

I agree with Jerry! I was thinking that, but have learned to look before I speak or in this case type! I believe you can buy the vent tube cap at your local parts house fairly cheap. Window screen idea works as well!
