Hey all. I've just bought my new "old" truck, and I am having a tough time deciphering these numbers for my 1950 Chevy pickup. I know it was made in Canada, so I've had difficulty finding all the info, almost all ID sites, pages, documents are for American made. I did find one page of info, but I'm not too sure how to read it all. I only know that the truck was built in 1950. Any help would be appreciated, as I'm trying to budget for repairs, and there's a big difference in 3/4 ton and 1 ton costs.
(although I'm fairly certain it's a 1-ton)

I'd also really like to know what the original paint/trim color was. I am currently overseas and have yet to see this truck in person, but I've tons of pictures, and will be starting on this project in a few months. Thanks in advance for any help. I'm sure you'll be seeing me around as I muddle my way through my very first project. grin

model 1434
serial 0143417503
engine x392011
trim 394
paint 32
body serial 1543

Here are some pics. 1950 Chevy truck

1434 - welcome to the 1 ton club Kyllaen. Same truck as mine.

serial 0143417503
0 = 1950
1 = Chevrolet
4 = Series 4
3 = Wheelbase - 137"
4 = Pickup
17503 = VIN#

Trim 394 - Brown Leatherette

Body Serial 1543 - Your truck was the 1543rd built that year.

The engine number will match a stamped number on the block, *IF* the engine is original. If it does, hold onto it! From the photos, the engine looks to be a 216.

I don't know the paint code off hand. However I am interested to see that the interior dash looks to be silver. I'll be interested to hear once you get into it if behind some of the "untouched" cab metal if its still silver.

Looks like you have a great truck there!

Welcome to the club!

Mark

Wow... thanks for the info. It's nice to have connected so quickly with someone who has the same beast... I'm sure I'll be picking your brain. My husband is quite knowledgeable about mechanics, but has a strange affinity to British cars (to each his own I suppose), so these are a bit of an adventure for him. Besides, I'd really like to do most of the work myself.

I've actually come across pics of your truck in my search for information. Quite nice~~

I'll let you know what I find when I make it home and start muscling those rusted bolts off. Take care!

Hi, Kyllaen, GM Canada had a vintage package available. It cost $30.00 in 2005. The phone # then was 1 888 467 6853. It will give you all the above information plus its build day, what plant it was made at and its colour name.

Hello Kyllaen

Just to add to what Hippy said the web site for GM Canada Heritage is http://www.vintagevehicleservices.com/index.html

The engine number is on a tab just behind the distributor under all the grunge.

Thanks guys. I did come across the GM package on my search, but figured maybe the info was out there for free.. as the American made stuff is. Thanks for the heads up about the engine #.

Kyllaen,

I haven't found it for free either... some of the info is out there, however to get some of the specific dates and original engine specs, you have to contact GM. The color code I have stumbled upon during my search, but can't find it now!

So what's the plan for the truck?

Do yourself a favor and pick up a can of PB Blaster and give a little shot of it to any bolt / screw you want to remove. I've removed almost every bolt there was on mine, and only had to wrestle with less than a handful.

Right now I'm in Taiwan, heading back to Canada in a month... so without having seen the truck, it's hard to judge. My pipe-dream is just to get it running, inspected, and insured. Probably get it sandblasted, do some body work, slap some primer on and drive it. I figure a few months. eek eek HA! I'll pick up some of that PB Blaster post-haste!

That's a loaded question, hey? I could either look really clever, or really stupid! I got it for $1700. In comparison to what we'd seen advertised around, it seemed like a good deal.

I think you did well at that price, if the tins are in good shape!

They seem pretty good from photos, and the news from the father-in-law. A few small dents and one hole to patch so far.... at least the tree didn't bounce off the hood before it went through the windshield!!
