Started installing the new wiring harness on the 46, smooth sailing- engine comp. stop sw. and hibeam switch done. Painted the volt reg cover, next Sat. I'll finish wiring the cab/dash and fire it up again. Bought a 1959 Apache 3/4 stepside longbed last weekend and took the broken shift lever off to silver braze it.It starts and runs great, needs body work.

Had the body guy out today. He thinks the frame straightening on the '46 half ton will be an easy fix. And even better, much less dollar wise than I expected!!!!!

I changed out the old water pump to a new old one I got from a nice guy who I am buying a 1949 Chevy 1/2 ton from in the near future and this water pump was in a box of extra parts for the truck. I told him I would give him $20 since he was unsure of the condition but he told me to just take it. Karma is great when it pays off.

Looks great Jim,at least your exhaust guy left enough room for your driveshaft!
Mine didn't have the shaft fitted when I got mine done,I guess the (young)guy was too used to working on front wheel drive cars!

Recently whilst running my engine I've had some misfire problems.
I spent some time today cleaning spark plugs(they were sooted up due to many choke starts over the winter),checked and re-checked the plug wires,I also found the timing was out.
I reset the timing(static) although I do need to get a timing light to make sure it's bang on.

misfire cured...... drive

John,
If I remember correctly, the engine out of time can be a contributor to sootied plugs.

Got some more done, I re-installed my 'vintage AC' (the cowl and side vent) grin
Now to address the problem of windshield wipers,I'm using a set up from a series one Land Rover (easy enough) it's getting under the dashboard (me,not the wipers)to fit it that's the problem!

It's certainly running better than at any other time since I fitted it Jim.
I also wound the mixture screws in a 3rd of a turn.
It will get a full service and tune up before it officially hits the road anyway.
It'll do for now.

stripped apart 2 of the 4 doors i have for inspection today. also cut the bottom rails of the front frame horns to match the tops and filled one of the voids were the shackle hung down. then did some finish welding on my trans crossmember. only thing left on that now is to drill some holes and weld up some backing plates for inside the boxed frame. so i can bolt it in place. no pics yet but will try load some up and post in my photo bucket later this week. on a side note started dealing on a 1979 chevrolet luv for a beat around truck. i know its imported but i like that old body style. later MO
ps. saturday i cleaned up the shop. blew down the walls and ceiling, put tools away and swept up. needed it badly

On Monday, I was heading out to do some running around in my truck and the speedometer started doing things it's never done before. Bouncing around, jumping to max then back to 0, all over the place. Got on my favorite web site and looked in the search area to find out what was up. Got some great info (as usual) and took to the repair. Removed speedo cable from back of gauge and cleaned and lubed it up with white lithium and replaced it, works fine again. The funny thing is that at some point before 75 someone must have replaced the speedometer, because on the back of the housing, written in grease pencil was $2.00. I checked on line and these things now go for over $200! Wow!

$2.00 would have been a bargain price at the salvage yard. My guess it was replaced to "turn the mileage back" a few thousand miles when the truck was about 10 years old. grin

Today I'll be attempting to determine what the cause is and fix the drupe in the bed. It's about 1/2" down on the right rear.
This weekend I'll be trying to finish up my 3 point seatbelts.

I've been reassembling the front end - I've changed out springs, shocks, and shackles, and converted to tapered roller bearings and front disc brakes. I'll be adding a dual master cylinder, new brake lines, and new rear cylinders over the next week or so.

One other thing - she's had a face lift. My wife thought that a chrome grill really suited the truck...

Cheers,
Fraser

First post on here. Today I worked on wiring, removed old windlace & lower windlace on both sides. Removed everthing on the firewall to get ready for new firewall pad. Made & finish rightside door panel making them out of cardboard/1/2"faoam/vinyl. Turned out better then I thought I could do. I'm going to do them for both trucks. Also going to do kick panels the same way now that I know I can do them.
night night

Finished pulling the cab and started on stripping the frame from the 55.1 parts/donor truck. Started removing the running board brackets (a couple are bent so I figure I'll take 'em all off), battery box, bed frame cross member, etc. Hope to get it to the sandblaster by next weekend.

Spent a few hours trying to level the bed. It's still on the rack so I won't know if I was successful until I get it down on Monday.
If it looks level I'll finish my 3 point seatbelts.

Decided to adjust my 1957 3100's parking brake cables. That was the plan anyway...

Along the way, I fought my right rear drum adjustment and discovered (after four hours of frustration) that I had put the wrong pads on the rear. The rear brakes were the 2s and the fronts were 1 7/8s. Oops. I know who the idiot is to blame for that one! Swapped them out and everything started going easier.

But not easy...

I still could not get the top end of the pads to close up enough. After rooting through every possible cause, I figured out that the cables themselves were not releasing in the assembly. Imagine that...65 year old cables that were as frozen by rust as the rest of this wonderful heap. Fortunately, I had the ones from the 5-lug axle someone put on. Swapped those in, jury-rigged a couple of clips, and voila! The brakes were now in adjustment and the cables retracted as they should.

That allowed me to then start the adjustment job I had begun in the morning. About 1.5 hours later, I had a parking brake that was adjusted as per the specs in the manual (locked at less than 9 clicks out).

Took a test drive around the yard (still no doors, fenders, seat belts, or lights of any kind). Momma rode with me because she was feeling brave.

Learned a lot along the way. Now know every adjustment that can be made to this subsystem.

What a wonderful day.

Jim

Positioned my new fuel tank and marked the locations for the filler neck & drain as well as the necessary cutouts in the floor and wall. Made a little progress on re-doing the entry door. It is still a bear to deal with. The danged blasted thing cannot be made square (ie; "simple") due to a very slight curve all along one edge. The other is straight which is gonna make skinning lots of fun (not!). At least the tank is now on it's way to the shop for finalizing. Onward!

I rebuilt the generator this afternoon. Bought the rebuild kit from Classic Generator. He said it would arrive this afternoon and it did. Replaced the bearing, bushing, brushes, seals, gaskets, bushing wick, contacts and other misc, parts. Painted it to boot.

Looks good, runs great. Gonna do the starter next.

I bought a six lug rear end for my heavy half 54. The pickup had a top leaf spring mount. The rear end I bought was a bottom spring mount. I had brackets made so I could mount my new rear end. They worked just fine. I was amazed at how simple the bracket was.

I did get my seat frame side panels painted though.

Welded on a couple of floor braces to stiffen the area around the wheel wells. Just need to pick up some nuts & bolts now to tie it all together.
