I am replacing the manifold gasket and don't know the tightening sequence, it is made of aluminum,do I need a sealer for this gasket, if so what type. The head has 2 pin's, 1 at each end, also has 6 bolts or studs. Changing the valve cover gasket and need the sequence and do I need a sealer, it is made of cork. 3 bolts on 1 side & 4 on the other. It works best to glue the gasket to the valve cover, being careful to line up the bolt holes, and then install on motor. High tack should be available at napa or somewhere like that and should have easy to follow instructions on the can. Be sure to only glue one side or youll have a hellava time ever getting it off again. I dont know on the other.

If it has a problem with warpage or rough surfaces you can use a high temp copper RTV on the gasket. Tighten the bolts a little at a time from the center out. I like to put grade 8 SAE flat washers under the heads of the bolts to transfer the torque better. After you warm up the engine tighten them again & once more after it has been driven a while. Like 66 says, glue the gasket to the valve cover. Tighten them the same way, a little at a time , keep going around. I like to put a little RTV on the rear edge of the valve cover gasket as that is were they tend to leak. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I'm now onto my next problem which is white smoke from the exhaust. I changed spark plugs and the smoke got worse. My friend is going to look at it on the 20th to see what needs to be done, the car having sat for 20&years and started for a couple of minutes from time to time to stop things from siezing, it may just need a good run. Thanks again. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 7 | 66Suburban. Just a word to say thanks and introducing me to the permatex product, great stuff. Things went well. As soon as I solve my white smoke problem, I can then have it certified and start enjoying my ride.
