Includes new rubber grommets for the transmission arms and a cute little spring loaded lock clip to hold the arms on. I was glad to get this as I had to fabricate a clip last time I was into these wipers.
The package was delivered to the office this morning, and I went home at lunch and just put that sucker in the truck. Took about 45 mins. Remembered once again why I hate working under the dash.
I recently installed a dual fuel pump in anticipation of the rebuilt vacuum motor.
Fired up the truck and the wipers work fine on a dry windshield. So I went for a drive to see how the wipers would work when I stepped on the gas.
Soon as I put my foot down on the pedal, the wipers come to a dead stop. Now the windshield is dry, but I was really hoping that the vacuum pump half of the fuel pump would help. My vacuum gauge connected to the wiper line showed about 14 when accelerating.
When I had the motor out, I tried the arms from under the dash, and they seemed to be stiff about half way through the stroke. They also squeak a bit. The stud that connects to the wiper arm also seems loose as if a bushing is worn where it comes through the cowl.
This has got me thinking about replacing the wiper transmission assemblies. Seems I saw these were being reproduced.
Any thoughts about this? Shouldn't the dual fuel pump be giving me enough vacuum to operate the wipers during acceleration?

What helped most was a vacuum reservoir. You know, it looks like a large tin can with a hose coming out of the end. Make sure it has a one way valve on the end to keep the vacuum from feeding back to the manifold.
As far as the transmission, mine are the same way. I've pondered this and come to this conclusion. If they were tight, that would add friction and make the wiper motor work harder. The way I figure it, the loose pivots keep from adding too much friction. Any other thought???

( I had gauge under the dash ). Dry windshields do have much more friction! | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 | I could not figure out anyway to get oil to the shaft. Not without taking the whole transmission unit out of the truck, anyway.
How do they come out? I see a nut on the cowl side, does this come off and the unit then drops out under the dash?

I found oiling the "sort-of-ball-joint-things" under the dash helped, and then if you pop off the the wiper arms, you could put a drip of oil on there too. At least, that's what I've found helpful on my knackered wiper set up that currently forms the basis for my "rain seein" system. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | Here is an explanation of how the double pump works and what you should expect. 54 Truck Manual It appears that you have more than enough vacuum to have your unit run correctly. I wonder if you have too much friction, as you suspect. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 | Thanks.
Think I'll try that test.
