The problem appears to be no current/spark/whatever is coming through the wire from the top of the coil to the distributor. Its a new coil and ballast resistor. All wiring appears to be OK. Any ideas? Timing is also believed to be adjusted properly. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 23 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 23 | With the ignition on, power is getting to both the plus and minus side of the coil. I guess the question is, what would cause the no spark condition when you hold the high tension wire from the coil to ground and crank the engine?? It sounds like the circuit through the points is not getting completed for some reason, either incorrect connections inside the distributor, or the distributor housing failing to get a ground. Points open- - -battery voltage at the coil (-), points closed, 0 V. at the coil (-) terminal. If it's not doing that, the coil can't develop a spark. Jerry

Heres the latest...the distributor has good ground and battery voltage at the coil with the points open and no voltage with the points closed. I guess its back to the books....the coil is new. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | This is really a simple setup. I assume that "holding the high tension wire to ground" means leaving a gap. If you don't have a gap, there will be no spark. I like to connect a spark plug wire into the coil, attach the other end to a spark plug and sit it on the valve cover. That way I can check for a healthy spark. I know that if the condenser is open, it will generate almost no spark at all. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 23 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 23 | Again, thanls for all the help. I do now have spark from the coil. All of the electrical seems to check out. Now I guess its on to the carburetor. | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | The engine will start without a carburetor. I'm still guessing it's out of time. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 116 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 116 | +1 on the timng. When I got my 248 back we installed the dist. at the engine shop, turns out we were one tooth off on the dist. It did start, but ran terrible. Once we got it in correct, different engine completely.
