So heres my question. i know 12v is the best option but can be pricey. my truck starts great and runs great with the 6v system in place now. What i would like to do is put a 8v battery and a 6v alternator and be able to get rid of the pesky regulator that could cuase me problems. has anyone done this? will it work??? thanks guys

Why do you want an 8v battery if your vehicle works fine with a 6v battery?
| | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 15 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 15 | well its free thats a good start, but a old timer said that they used to put 8v's in his old trucks to help it crank faster and my 6v battery is from the 60's and doesn't work anymore only reason i know it works on 6v is I borrowed a 6v out of a 48 8n ford tractor but that needs it more then my truck

The voltage regulator will have to be set to 9.5 volts to charge it, and a "6 volt alternator" would have to have a custom-made solid state regulator to achieve that voltage. Your "free" battery will end up costing you about a thousand dollars to build a one-off charging system to keep it charged, and headlights and other 6 volt items will have a drastically shortened lifespan. You'll also need a custom-specification ballast resistor to keep from burning out the points on a regular basis. Good luck!
