I'm looking for a recommendation on an exhaust solution for my '54 Chevy truck. The previous owner had installed "dual exhaust" by drilling a hole in the exhaust manifold and welding a 2" exhaust pipe in between the number 5 & 6 cylinders. Strangely, the pipe from the "custom" exhaust is run through glass pack muffler. The exhaust pipe running from the stock exhaust manifold location to the rear of the truck has no muffler. The truck's exhaust note sounds like an asthmatic VW beetle, so I'd like to upgrade to more standard dual exhaust system. I'm planning to buy headers for the 235 engine, but I'd appreciate a recommendation for a good muffler/system for the 235 engine. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I think the best solution would be to buy a good 235 manifold and put in a stock pipe and muffler. Or am I missing something?

It looks like he wants a "more standard" dual exhaust system, but there was no standard dual exhaust system.

CharlSS,

What kind of headers will you be buying? If they are the common Fenton dual-exhaust headers, Patrick's in AZ sells a nice stainless steel set $$$) and the muffler is load.

Tube headers are available from Chevs of the 40s.

Call them and see what they recommend for an exhaust system for either type of headers.

If'n you're looking to get rid of the loud "brrraaaaaaaaaaaaap" coming from the glass pack, and want to still have dual exhaust, why not shove two repop stock mufflers under the truck. I bet it would sound cool. Split exhaust on an inline sounds good. I had fentons and glass packs on my last truck, it was a bit too loud for me as a daily driver. But it did sound pretty sweet.

Click on the link below, go to online catalog and then chose what your looking for. Their phone number is also listed on the bottom of the main page. I usually call them and pick the stuff up myself.

The NCA promotes itself as a fee paying "club" to be able to purchase parts at a favorable price. Shop around. You can do better without paying a membership fee.

Isn't the kit from National Chevy Association for cars or do they fit the trucks as well?

Allen, I got my exhaust (minus my Fentons) from them. They didn't list the trucks on their website but I called and they had patterns for the trucks. The price was resonable, ($300 if I remember). The forward pipe that connected to the header had to be "massaged" a bit, but the rest fit very well. With a purchase over a certain dollar amount membership was included. What that entailed was pretty much a monthly newsletter. They were very helpful, and easy to deal with. I bought my exhaust from them about 3 yrs. ago

I bought Fenton Headers for my '55 First Series 235 engine. They bolted right on with the original bolts/washers. The owner before me had the original manifold split w/ dual exhaust on it. It was 'ok', but didn't do too good on the welding. I saw on a forum here that someone used Waldrons Exhuast for their truck of same eara as mine. Here is their link http://www.waldronexhaust.com/
I called them (1-800-503-9428) to get a quote on my truck and went ahead and purchased from them! The Fenton headers were not going to align with my existing exhuast, and by the time I pay another company to redo the existing, I decided to purchase their kit premade for my truck and save time/aggrivation later. I will add though... I had to modify my carb linkage due to the headers were in the way of the original linkage route.
