By the way? Are they available for the 1 1/2 and 2 ton AD trucks? But, anyhow, could old drums be spray welded and re-machined if they are past the allowable machining specs? Anyone ever heard of that? The post in the Big Bolt page was from South Africa.

It would also be very suceptible to the added material breaking loose under the stress of pressure from the brake shoes. I've seen spray-welded stroker crankshafts in flathead Fords with the built-up section loose and spinning on the crank journal. It makes for a really weird-sounding knock!

The brake drum is machined out in a lathe, then the brake drum is heated and shrunk onto a steel band (basically a short section of large diameter seamless tube) and turned on a lathe again to ensure the correct internal diameter and concentricity.
You need to have this modification done on both drums on an axle because the friction generated of the brake linings is different against steel and cast iron. I spent a long time trying to cure a brake pull on an old Austin car before I spotted that a PO had only had one front drum repaired with a steel sleeve. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,997 Big Bolt Forum Co-moderator | | Big Bolt Forum Co-moderator Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,997 | Interesting.
