59 235 newly rebuilt, has fentons, offy, duel rochesters(new rebuilds), pertronix, and 1950 flywheel, otherwise all stock. I have made these upgrades with all the helpfull info found on this site. moter has run great with 18 pds vac at 700 rpm idle.recently started preignition when shutting down, and now is very hard to start.when i finally get it going, can not go below 950-1000 rpm without dying. checked timing, choke, and checked for vaccum leaks with propane.came up with nothing.in the process of this, problems getting worse.motor races and overheats(new radiator, hoses, thermostat, cap) the only thing i found was the distributor seems to wobble, but timming mark doesnt fluctuate.please help with any info.thanks

Hy 50 sedan, Firstly welcome, now to the problems, a properly timed engine with the correct air fuel ratio, and a functioning cooling system should not overheat. A lean mixture will cause over heating, as will advanced timing. Is there a chance some sludge from the fuel tank contaminated your carbs? Did you time the engine with the vacuum line removed from the distributer and plugged? All the engine run on problems I have encountered were cured by closing the throttle as much as possible at idle. The last thing I can think of is not a pleasant one, could the engine be tight from a bearing or ring problem? How much vacuum do you have when you get it to run now? I hope some of this helps, good luck.

If you used the flywheel to time it that's your problem. A 1950 flywheel will be for a 216 engine timed at 5 deg. BTDC. A later 235 will want 2 deg. ATDC. Time it with a vacuum gauge for the highest reading.

thanks guys for the replies. curt b you are correct about the flywheel mark, i forgot that i initialy timed with vacum gauge. problem seems to have gotten better. tightened intake, and carb bases, also noticed dist clamp must have been a little loose, so i re-timed and clamped tight. motor now idling ok. could have been vac leak along with timing. dist still wobbling,(ordered new one) and vac guage very jumpy but stays between 16-20. cannot find any vac leaks. any thoughts?

You may have more than one valve slightly out of adjustment or sticking or a ignition miss

If you fully warm it up and re adjust the valves that may disappear. Here's a tech tip:
