I well remember the three-on-the-tree gear shifter linkage issues on my dad's '69 C-10. On that truck, the linkage would become hung and dinking around under the hood had to be performed to uncross the rods, which I never knew how to do.

On my '69, the shifter doesn't become hung so much as it enters an altered state of consciousness where reverse is 2nd and 1st is 3rd. But in this case, when in the altered reverse (that's really 2nd) the shifter is considerably higher than normal and lower when in 1st (which is really 3rd). I ca shift and reshift a few times while rolling and get the linkage back into a normal state without having to go under the hood.

Where in the world do I begin to determine which linkage parts are worn out? I've though of comparing pics of the linkage rods positions in all normal and altered positions.

most likely the rods need adjusting - section 7 [3 speed trans] in your shop manual has all the details on proper functioning and adjustment of the shift mechanism

Bill, thanks for the pointer.

I have a shop menual and still can't get used to the idea that basically everything I need is in it. I did indeed find the linkage adjustment in Chapter 7.

The entire procedure is only 4 steps and a note. My problem is, though, that 1) the manual doesn't have step-by-step pics, and 2) I'm a beginnner and don't know the things that the manual assumes. For example, what's a mast jacket?

the mast jacket is the cover piece of the steering column ["steering mast"] - the 67-72 switched to a whole new shifter setup from all the previous series trucks, integral with the mast jacket instead of being mounted external to it ... it should be pretty easy to determine if anything is actually worn to the point of needing replacement, like maybe some metal grommet-like critters that are worn out [including at the trans arm/rod connection], otherwise if you have someone hold in the clutch and move the shifter thru the gears as you watch under the hood, it should all be pretty clear
