Got the green beast up and running today but I'm kinda concerned about how much oil is coming out of the rocker arm assembly oil connector tube's deflector. Do all oil connector tubes have such a deflector with a hole in the tube underneath?

Here's a pic:

http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2255691250050768402SFuQDC

Here's a video showing how much oil is spewing out of the deflector. Yes the tube is clear of all debris and I do see some oil dripping out of the rocker arm assembly above piston #6, etc.

With so much oil coming out of the deflector, I could consider pluging up the hole but wonder the impact if all this oil was suddenly diverted to the 12 rockers. Too much?

Yes I do have a banjo (drilled) head bolt in #1 position.

Is that a full pressure 235? I'm going to be starting mine here in a month or so and I'd be interested in the answer also. Larry

I don't know if it's just me but I didn't see oil pouring out of the deflector in the video. Be glad you have plenty of oil getting up there because I just corrected a major blockage that prevented oil from getting up to my rockers and it caused some pretty severe scoring on the shaft. I'm burning oil, too, and I don't know if that blockage accelerated wear in the valve guides or not.
This is the rearmost fitting where the oil tube connects (behind the pushrod cover). It's almost completely blocked with crud:

This is what it's supposed to look like:

I see you say you have a 1960-62 engine.
You should not have that type of connector.
You should have a crimped one Like this.

Yes the motor is a '60-62. So Dave what you say I should have is basically the same except there is no opening midway in the tube. Strictly from the head to the rocker arm assembly shafts.

So could I simply cover or plug the hole in the tube directing full pressure to the rocer arm assembly?

You could crimp off the tube before the deflector. You do not want the overflow at all on that engine.

Wow, You don't see the oil spewing out on the right side? It shot out so much and so far, I lost a quart onto the floor withing 5 minutes.

Dave,
I think I have myself as well as you maybe confused. I was calling the clip on piece that covers a hole in the tube as being the "deflector".

Per my picture and video, the oil is going from the left side up and over then back to the rocker arm assembly. If I crimp the tube before the "deflector", how would any oil get to the rocker arm shafts?

Do I need to remove the drilled head bolt and install a regular head bolt?

You would crimp it after it comes out of the brass connecter and before the deflector clip.
So the oil will come up out of the head, into the connector and out through the shafts, that's all.

About ten days ago LonnieC started a similar thread about rocker arl oiling connectors.
In that thread Wally/ Montana posted an image of the two types of connectors. You could try to crimp the discharge tube to look like the 1959 and later connector.

I see that my first photo might have been confusing so here I labeled it showing the flow of the oil via the arrows. A is the deflector that has a hole underneath in the tube. B is the end of the flow that has a crimped tube underneath which is hidden from view.

Nevertheless, this oiler seems to be from a 216 so I need either get a correct one as Pre '68 Dave suggested or modify mine by plugging up the deflector hole.

Also since I have introduced a drilled head bolt, I might swap back to a non drilled bolt to see if that will help cut down the amount of oil coming up.

Oh joy......

Thats from a 216 (and, correct me if I'm wrong, an early splash oiled 235). ...and the oil flow goes the other direction, at least on a 216. It comes up from the line thru the block, empties into the trough and feeds via gravity back down to the pushrods, lifters, cam and finally the pan.

wow, great photo. It explains why I had that crimped off tube on my connector. Thanks
