I'm considering putting a 292 in my 1940 3/4 ton but want to keep the original clutch and brake pedals.

Gm used an NV4500 on their trucks in the 90s, so there are bellhousings that will bolt up to both the 292 and the gm NV4500.
The 1955 and later v8 bellhousings, will bolt up to your 292, but you will need to modify the crossmember to accept the angled mounts. 1940 bellhousings have provisions to mount the clutch and brake pedals, 1955 and later bellhousings do not.
When gm used the NV4500 in there trucks, the bellhousing did not bolt to a crossmember. The motor used 2 front side mounts, and 1 tail support on the transmission. The side mounts should not be a problem to fabricate, but losing the bellhousing crossmember may give you some problems in your 1940.
I would consider using a stovebolt to th350 adapter turned around to bolt the 292 to the 1940 stovebolt bellhousing. You would likely have to make your own adapter to run the nv4500 behind the stovebolt bellhousing. I made an adapter for my 1940, but still haven't gotten around to working on that truck. I can send pics on request. By the way, thanks for the brake pedal stuff from that 1.5 ton gmc

I was looking for a cast iron bell housing and have Buffalo weld on the brake and clutch mount. I was hoping there was one that had the bolt pattern for an NV4500.
Perhaps the Advanced Adapter plate is the best route. That way I could easily put in the transmission cross member | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | If you use the AA plate, you will need a 1969 and later truck bellhousing with the 5.125 bore. You could use an earlier bellhousing with the 4.686 bore and hog it out to 5.125 inches, or have the indexing ring on the adapter plate turned down on a lathe to 4.686 inches.
I have an NV4500 in my 1959 gmc, and another ready to go in my 1940. The homemade adapter for my 1940 should fit your 1940 if you wanted to dry fit the NV4500 before swapping engines. | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 | There is a rare bell housing used on early versions of the RPO MY6. That has both the Chev and Dodge (A833 trans) bolt patterns. I don't know that the A833 bolt pattern and NV4500 are the same. The MY6 was used from 82-86, so the bell housing I'm guessing would be about an 82.

Thanks for the offer.
I just picked up the 292 last weekend and don't have an NV4500 yet. I'm thinking it's the best bet behind the 292. I put a T5 behind a 235 in my 46 but I think a T5 would be too light behind the 292. I plan on hoping the 292 up a bit which should put out around 275-300hp.

All you need to find is a standard transmission bellhousing from one of those years and its a bolt up except the drive shaft. Remember, too, that you MUST use the correct fluid in your NV4500, Castrol SYNTORQ. NOTHING else will work correctly. Get it from Chevy or Dodge dealers for about $28.00/QT! It takes 4! | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | I use AMSoil in mine. It still comes out to about $100 to fill it.

You still have to deal with Hydro. slave cylinder for clutch, but there are a couple good sites to walk you through that.

What about the mechanical speedometer. The gm version is set up for a velocity sensor. The early dodge nv4500 has a pulse generator that can easily be pulled out to make room for a traditional speedo pinion. There are plenty of charts published on the internet that tell you which speedo pinion is needed for the differential/ tire combination.
