Anyone ever had a water pump rebuilt? I have a 235 with a short shaft. Quotes from 3 places run $70 - $90 (Flying Dutchman, Water Pump Man, Arthur Gould) and would include new bearings, seals, gaskets, clean and paint.

I'd buy the $30 one from Rock auto, Press the pulley mount to where I need it and cut off the excess shaft.

I bought it new from Rock Auto 7 years and 10,000 miles ago for a little over $75. So I
went to Rock Auto's catalog to order a new one, no listing any more! Looked to JC,
Chev's of the 40's and a couple others and they are up around $120 now for a new pump.
Don’t want to put a used pump on cuz the few that I saw, even though they blasted them
and painted them a pretty color, the snouts were pretty badly putted from rust under the
paint.
Back when I was a teen working in the Chevy parts department we stocked the
bearing/seal assembles for them. In fact I replace a couple in my own cars. It’s a simple
matter of pressing them out and pressing the assembly back in. Problem now is only the
rebuilder have access to the bearing assemblies now.

NAPA lists a remanufactured 1950 water pump for about $70 plus shipping (it is interesting that they now charge shipping for items not in the local warehouse).

At my Napa it's $92 and they said the shipping charge is due to the fact that it's not coming from their warehouse but rather directly from the dealer.

I would rather stick with parts I know work and fit my engine. Already made the mistake of ordering one from Eckler's prior to knowing there were different shaft lengths so I've got a cool door stop/paper weight.

I have no interest in cutting excess shaft lengths, etc. I'm a newbie and overwhelmed to begin with!

If you can get someone to rebuild it I would go that route. You would need the right tools to press the flange and cut the shaft on a new (rebuilt) one. If you are able to get it rebuilt please let us know and for how much. The bearings on my short shaft pump went out but I couldn't find a local shop that would rebuild it...I fortunately found another one on ebay.

There's always the option of getting an adapter plate to fit a 216 pump.

Short shaft pumps are not manufactured. They are cut off standard pumps. If you order one from NAPA it will be another standard pump. If you already have one it is not a "doorstop". It is what you need to get your truck on the road again.
