I have just joined and it has already been a wealth of information and stress relief.
Several years ago I bought a 1965 GMC Stepside and found that it has a 305 V6 (with a 4speed T1 trans). This is not a typo. The engine is marked as such. I was told it was the original engine and that the only thing that was not original was the rear axle. The rear bumper also looks different than any other picture I have seen (I will get pictures soon). I started to restore it and had the worst time tying to convince local mechanics I wasn't crazy, as I was looking for someone to help with some clutch issues. Anyways I know this engine is real and have found out a bit about the history, but still have no idea about it really. Rarity? Is it factory stock? Was there a different bumper option, possibly a towing or ranch package?

They were only used in GMC's however, from 1960 through early 1970's. Have a read here to get familiar with them: http://6066gmcguy.org/Lots of folks on that page who have them and are trying to keep them going. The same block was used for multiple displacements including 351, 379, 401, 432 and 478 cubic inches. Bumper- in 1965 rear bumpers were an option. Accordingly, most were dealer installed for those folks who chose them. Dealers had a lot of different styles to choose from. Post some pictures and let's see what you have? My son has one in his 66 and he as gone so far to procure a spare block to rebuild when the original dies (if it does).
I have grown fond of the motors too. They are something unique that when you pop the hood should get some conversation going.
They are built stout. Big main bearings, lots of metal in those things to hold it together.
If I ever have time I would like to build one with some boost, like a remote turbo, just for fun. With a sheet metal intake and Holley style carb, and homemade headers. Just to be even more different.
The only thing is some rebuild parts are getting a little harder to find, like oversize pistons. You can get customs if you want to spend the money, so that is the only thing stopping you.
We went through my son's motor, changed fluids, put in all new ignition components, filters, stuff like that, and he is just been driving it ever since. He loves it.

| | | | Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 8 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 8 | My 63 has one talk about torque same as yours 305 v6 E I'm in the process of restoreing it now talk about a good looking unique engine when there all cleanded up an painted....check the plate on the kicker panel some of them came factory or dealer with more h.p. and it should tell you what motor it came with but you'll have to check the cab to engine #s to know for sure those are the sought after ones in my opinion there's a couple guys here that have rebuilt them from top to bottom there's. A couple places that offer almost any stock replacement part or hop up part you could ever want !ill get you a list of the sites and and pics of mine o yea rj might have some of the hard to find compents an extras like p.s. ac ect.you'll have to ask.
A nut among the bolters sure ill like it quite well here.I enjoy the 60-66 "iron" I like the gmcs,chimys,chevys regardless these trucks rule! Mine 63 gmc fleetside long bed. Custom cab 3/4tfirst truck<being restored  62 chevy short bed fleetside 1/2t
