I did a search on this site for turbine sprayers, without much found on the subject. Anyone here use one? Opinions? We sprayed PPG DCC epoxy finish coat on my suburban with good results. We will be using it again next Spring.
Did you search on "turbine"?

The case on mine is not plastic - it is sheet metal. Here is a list of modern units like my unit (I think mine is a Model 23 ). | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,997 Big Bolt Forum Co-moderator | | Big Bolt Forum Co-moderator Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,997 | I have a 2-stage Accuspray (now 3M) sprayer. Did you search on "turbine"? I searched "turbine" under tools and paint for the last two years and got one thread. Or, the Paint and Body Shop.

Took a bit to get used to operating it, but it will spray anything from industrial latex to water borne stuff, with different projectors.
It is strange to drag around the huge hose. It is incredible to me how much less overspray there was, but I'd never used a HVLP before. Previously, I'd mostly sprayed gel-coat, on the end of a 50hp compressor. (thats not really a precise operation)
The turbine I used is a four stage, it makes 8.5 psi, and about 50cfm I believe. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,997 Big Bolt Forum Co-moderator | | Big Bolt Forum Co-moderator Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,997 | Seems like turbine systems eliminate the moisture problem one might have in using a compressor. Are they more friendly to less experienced painters than a compressor set up? I have done some spray painting on my tractor that I am restoring with good results, but spraying on large flat body panels may be a different story. I've always been curious how well the turbine system works. Just seems like not a lot of people seem to use the turbine systems. I'll probably be spraying this summer when the weather is good. I may build a portable booth. I think I have some plans for a pvc pipe and plastic booth that someone posted. I just have to find the book mark. Cheers.

It works great and very convenient. However, I could never completely get the orange peel out, no matter how I adjusted the gun. As best as I can tell the gun is a decent one (also have three tip sizes). In places it did OK, but I had to be especially careful of speed and distance. It just seemed like the system would not atomize the paint enough. I'm not sure if it made a difference, but the paint spec (PPG Omni) called for 55 psi at the gum, the Fuji has about 11 psi. I mixed the paint "thinner" to compensate. It worked great for my motorcycle but for my truck I just couldn't consistently get rid of the orange peel (did it three times). The fourth time I used a regular gun/compressor combination and it was way better, no orange peel and it was much easier to control, especially the clear-coat. Also, spraying into difficult to reach areas worked much better since I got better atomization and "power" without running the paint. Since I'm new at painting, it could easily have been my ineptitude with the HVLP system or possibly the paint characteristics. I do know for painting large surfaces I like the regular system much better. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 | Yes, the turbine I used, makes about the same texture that you see on new chevy trucks. It's light enough, that it can be removed with a foam polishing pad. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 255 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 255 | I purchased an Apollo HVLP unit about 5 years ago. works pretty well, but takes a bit of getting used to to get the gun settings correct for a proper spray. Otherwise its worked great. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 155 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2011 Posts: 155 | I have switch over to the PPS and the accuspray with the plastic gun faces,, I love it !

What model do you have, and pardon my ignorance, but what does PPS mean?
