Glad to check in, covering the southern Swedish chapter of the Bolt. Really, one must admit that the international forum applies to a rather large part of the globe. I am looking forward to meeting a flesh-and-blood bolter sometime. Lidköping is smack dab in the middle of the major road between the North Pole and ??? So stop on by, I'll put on some coffee.
I've got an extra chrome sidemirror and an old regulator, if you need them maybe it and the coffee will make the drive worthwhile.

Sadly my sprite is a mark 2 but a very early one. (SN/HAN6L 1461) The sheet metal work is all done and now it waits for my budget to recover enough for paint and the re-assembly. The Maple Leaf has big plans. I've been following Michael Corpolongo (CORPO) on his rat rod build of a '36 and am stealing a few good ideas on modernizing the drivetrain and brakes though I think that I'll stick with a more stock look.
Hi all. The world is fairly top-heavy from all the 'bolts in the northern hemisphere so I'll fly the flag for the southern trucks. I've got a '47 1.5 ton AD which is slowly getting rebuilt, two years gone now. It is now self-propelled and the cab is almost ready to go back on. I aim to prove that you can finish a truck in less than one lifetime.
I think I'll start a New Zealand- Aussie forum and see what happens, there's got to be more than one of me down here.
Hi Rich, welcome on board. There is a fair few 'bolters from both Australia and New Zealand.
I frequent Flickr and there's always loads of truck pics from OZ and NZ so they are out there! It just a matter of reaching out to the masses,and preaching the way of the Stovebolt. Here's a nice '49 from Queensland to get you started.
Mind you a 'Gabfest' in Australia might be a problem due to the sheer distances involved,plus you've also got the North and South islands to consider. I wonder where kiwiwilly is these days,he's not been around here for a while.
BTW got any pics of your truck, 2 years is relatively quick,I'm into year 7 on mine....... Jock.

Those storms look horrific Jock! Hope you fared well, unlike some of those pics We had one hit here in Waroona a few months ago,a mini tornado that cut a path of destruction through town and looked the same as your pictures......only, there are not many houses and buildings around here!

This was the worst one to hit the Central belt in 13 years Bob,we are more susceptible to gales rather than tornadoes. We catch the heavy stuff coming in from the North Atlantic.
Mind you where I stay has the cover of the Mull of Kintyre and the Isle of Arran,the folks further north in for example Caithness,get the whole nine yards! Winter storms up there move rocks the size of Stovebolts up the beaches! Thats why the west coast look like it does. I drove along a coastal road the other day and the coastline has actually changed...... The difference is the folks there have 'evolved' to live with it. The townies haven't.
Although.... Britain statistically has more tornadoes than America relative to our land mass,the ones here are nothing like the scale you see in the USA. Thankfully i've never seen one!
My house is relatively new (8yrs)and stood up to the battering well,and as I said previously, "The Stovebolt Scottish HQ" was OK too...

The 'HQ' is a 20'x12' wooden garage Bob,it's well anchored with 20 6" expanding Rawlbolts to a concrete base,and my belt!
I got my priorities right though,the wifes F*rd sits out in the driveway......

Weather sounds like New Scotland, particularly the coastal damage. Parts of NS lose up to 4 feet a year from coastal erosion.
I suspect Nova Scotia is in the international zone, I did have a note from an Ebay seller once - "Sorry we don't ship to Nova Scotia, only the US and Canada."

Nope, you're unique
But there are a few other stovebolts in daily use down here, several locally (NorthCanterbury) get plenty of road time. It's always great to see them out and about , and so often with some sort of load on board too.
hi Dusty I'm aware of the existence of trucks in Canterbury. A year ago I bought all I could carry from a guy in Christchurch who was rodding one, all he wanted was the cab. Shame for the truck but good for me.
Your truck looks excellent. Mine is Canadian, as they all were in NZ. i am in long term negotiation with the wife- I want the original green, she wants something fancy.
Eventually I will get a 235 and 5 speed, to make it most practical. Although a blue or black Holden 202 is also possible.

The weather suited the Scots perfectly,that was just like a normal summers day here!

the welch are playing australia saturday night they hope the scots have sofened them up game is being played in brisbane they havent beaten oz in years but are 6 nation champs so should be good game
its a 235ci engine 56-57. yer the fuel cost was a little high! i came home and changed to a webber from the old carter.
we spat a few fan belts out on the journey...did a rear diff oil change in luxumbourg on a campsite! handbreak broke soon as we pulled on the ferry going!!...had starter motor strapped under the truck as a back up!..it was like a working holiday!!
Thanks for the reply Dano, I was just curious,that's the thing about road trips in old vehicles,it's always an adventure! At least your later engine is a full pressure unit,i'm not sure i would like to try a trip like that with an old babbit pounder!
Mind you,there's plenty of our US counterparts do long road trips in totally stock original trucks,but at least they have a better parts back up over there.
I love your panel,nice patina and it looks pretty solid! The artillery wheels are a nice touch too.
BTW I hope the recent weather hasn't caused you too much grief,I have never seen so many flood warnings! The main motorway near me was shut for hours the other day i've never seen anything like it,I think my next project's going to be building an Ark!

thanks jock, an ark is the way i think!...i took the truck to the isle of wight rock festival a few weeks ago and boy did it rust alot! i was madly covering it with engine oil to stop the bad weather..while driving water was coming in from everywhere! even with good seals...90pmh winds didnt help!
yep me trucks solid as hell! got it from a chap who was importing it from hollywood. and purchased it from the docks in london B-)..it was in a state when it came over...just about run...i dont think it has been on the road for years....so set to work.
its my 1st yank...after many nights of thinkin can i handle one!.. took 6 months of every night weekend..ect to rewire...fix the body up and just about re build everything.. it keeps me out of the pub alright.
cant bring myself to paint it at all so this winter going to have a mat clear coat all over to hold the weather back.! as again...im in the workshop 3rd time for gearbox out in a month ..and pleased its raining!! as its knackard until new oil seal goes in!
The salt air wouldn't do you any favours,especially being blown in horizontally! Do you still have the vacuum wipers?
My trucks my first 'Yank' and a Ca. truck too,imagine if ours had spent 60 years here in Blighty,there would be nothing left!
I agree with the clear coat though,it would be a shame to lose that originality,mine had great patina too,but the importer must've had a job lot of red lead paint! Good luck with the seal,I hope you're rolling again soon!

had a hell of a crap day with the seal going to post some stuff on here in a bit with some photos see if i can get any pointer!!
na the wipers i first got an old car one out of a ford (SPIT!) ka.. and put up with them wobbling like a normal car and not meeting in the centre! was a bit trippy!...last year went over to a proper usa model (electric) for the old girl.!
im bit worried as really want to take the truck to the hotrodhayride in surry...but at this rate 3 bloody day..and bust hands..its not looking good!
would love to bring the old girl up your way! but with this weather...its terrible and just seen the forcast for next week! rain...rain rain rain!...they did put straight 6 in boats!! maybe a better idea!

yep i here ya mate..i work up your way somtimes and its not good..i work in food packaging as a service engineer and they keep closing places.. NSRA northan meet will come around soon..and if you want somthing like hayride.look at the "tripout" its in bedford so a little closer for you.
It's unlikely i'll get to a show at all this year Dano,my truck isn't on the road yet. I know I could go in my daily driver but as i'm sure you know it's just not the same....
Even the show local to me this year has been cancelled,the owners of the venue hiked their prices to the moon! The organisers are currently trying to find another site. Fingers crossed!
The Hayride's on my bucket list along with Goodwood etc. I'll get there some day.
UPDATE: I was talking to a friend who was at the Americana show recently and said it was a nightmare,tents being robbed and loads of hassle,with lots of undesireables but he did mention the tripout show though. I/we might take a blast down in his daily driver,the last trip 'darn sarf' in his '59 Fairlane nearly bankrupted him!
If I do decide to go and if you are,i'll let you know and maybe we could meet up for a brew or two...

Hey Jock, the old splashy is not so bad, I've done several 2000 to 3000k trips in the truck, never hinted at a problem. Included in the daily grind , totalling nearly 90,000miles over the last 15 yrs. I'm pretty sure todays quality oils and modestly careful driving has helped. But essentially , I believe the design to be sound, just needs suitable care and proper maintance.
Hi Dusty. My hat's off to you using '40 as your daily driver,so you obviously know what your talking about then.
I wasn't dismissing the old low pressure system,it obviously worked considering the amount of them still around.
My own (splashy) engine had suffered a catastrophic rod failure and punched it's way out the block before I got the truck so I guess I based my assumptions on that,but then again I can't vouch for its previous 50+ years maintenance schedule.
Like you say,if properly maintained like most things,they can last a long,long time.

Jock, I'm sorry to hear your old bolt has been thrashed to death, I confess to trying to kill my '39 as a youth, only succeeded in lifting the tops off a couple of pistons was more successful with my mates '39 flathead V8, tossed a rod beautifully
I know,you still hear it today with the young 'uns revving their engines to the sort of of RPMs that makes valves bounce! Nothing changes much,it's roughly the same thing,just cr*ppier cars. I suppose they'll learn the hard way,just like us.......

Hi just purchased my big bolt, its still in the States waiting to get it shipped, is there any UK members out there,? i am looking for a NVG4500 5 speed transmission, i am sure the must be some one in UK who has one sitting in there garage, pm me if you can help, Thxs Mike

Hi Mike firstly welcome,sorry I haven't responded sooner,I don't check in here as much as I should.
To be honest this forum isn't as active as it should be,probably more so at this time of year as most of us are out there enjoying driving and showing our trucks given our relatively short 'show season'. Me included. In fact mine is pretty much a daily driver these days.
I'm not sure if you partake in other social media such as Farcebook but there are UK specific Chevy truck/American car and parts pages on there. I'll put some feelers out for you,I would dearly love a 5 speed in mine to but finances are a little shy at the moment.
What engine are you mating it to and I assume you will require a flywheel,clutch etc?
There are other UK based sites such as Rods 'n' sods,NSRA,Pistonheads etc that are aimed at the US/collector car market. I actually used a partsfinder site to locate a small block and transmission for mine. I got a response within 12 hours from a specialist breakers in Wigan and have since clocked over 3000+ relatively trouble free miles on my 'cut out' engine and box from an '81 Corvette.
A 3 or 4 speed auto gets old quick,we 'Brits' are too used to stirring cogs!

Hi there everyone. I have just joined here and also joined the ranks of the Chevy Truck owners. I have a 1938 Chevrolet Utility. A full resto is needed but I'm sure I can handle that OK.
Info I have is there were only 6 of these built. The NZ Air Force commissioned Chevrolet to build 6 in rhd and ship them to Christchurch NZ in late '38. Still trying to get a bit more history on them. I have never seen any like this anywhere else.
It's good to see someone other than a 47-53 truck owner in the UK. These as i'm sure you're aware are fairly common here now.
A '37 is pretty rare. There are many vendors based in the UK for truck parts now,although as mentioned previously they tend to steer towards the 47-53 models and later stuff although i'm sure they'd be willing to help with parts sourcing/shipping if required.
What are your plans,stock or modified?
Pics would be nice too.

I'm looking for a parts supplier for our old trucks in Europe. Any suggestions? I own a '58 Apache and I live in Belgium. Everything is available in the States but shipping is very expensive...

The best I can suggest are some in the UK JVL,there are many places here now who cater for these trucks,not sure how the Euro/£ exchange favours you but at least the shipping should be cheaper and as part of the EEC (for the moment) the duties should be less.

Welcome Andy, glad to see you've joined the gang, was your new truck from a fella Alex Gray in East Kilbride? Is this your new 'toy' by any chance?
EDIT: I have since chatted with Alex who confirmed this,it's a nice 'honest' relatively unmolested truck with bags of potential. Did you get the visor too? If so,they look terrible and you should give it to me to run a consumer test...on mine!
As you can see by my previous post there are plenty of guys here catering for our obsession here in the UK now. All my experiences in dealing with these vendors have been really positive and most if not all are considered friends now too. The scene here on our little island is just too small to suffer any scammers and con merchants anyway,they'd probably get lynched. lol.
I must also mention the kind folks here,many of whom have helped source parts and even sent them to me before receiving a single dime from me. It was all based on trust.......
Not wishing to tread on the Stovebolts toes,I'm not sure if you frequent 'Farcebook' but there are some UK based groups that cater for our old trucks,really handy for locating second hand parts (if required)and to keep an eye out for meetings and events. I recently scored a real peach of an original RH front fender/wing from the NSRA swap meet in Essex amongst other truck goodies.

Yeah Jock, that's the one. It came with a few bits and pieces including the visor. I agree, they look awful so when a local caravan dwelling chap came by looking for scrap metal I let him have it! - it was the first thing I did - putting it back on. Unfortunately it came without brakes too although this wasn't mentioned to me or the guy who delivered it. He rolled it off the trailer and near abouts went down a ditch. I rebuilt the master cylinder this weekend and they're now as good as gold. I've also got to replace the kingpins but essentially, as you say, it's a good honest truck that is pretty straight and solid. There are some jobs to do but that's the fun of it. I was a member here a good few years ago going by the name of LimeyC10 when I had a '66 and found it of great help and made some friends along the way - still in touch with a few of them. Any links you can send me to groups here in the UK would be welcome. I used to run a national club here called UK Kustoms and wrote for Custom Car but got fed up with the back biting and bitchyness so tend to stear clear of shows and the scene, as you say the scene is too small over here for all that

I love the idea of a visor but at 6'4" i'm not sure how i'd get on with that as I can hardly see the traffic lights as it is....lol.
Your new truck,did it have the original M/C? As you'll no doubt find out there's hundreds of upgrades available for these trucks,so much so you can even still buy brand new cabs if ever one was needed. (at a price of course).
So what's your plans,stock,resto-mod or full custom?
The links I provided above will keep you right as far as parts are concerned. I know what you mean too about some organisations here,they can get a bit too 'cliquey' for my liking. Custom Car and Str**t M*chine were mostly reponsible for my addiction,I used to run into Keith Seume regularly too when he was involved in the VWDRC.

Yeah, I can see traffic lights being a problem - especially abroad where they don't have a set across the street. The plan is to keep it pretty stock although not go too mad on restoring as I need it to work for me so don't want it to get to a stage where I daren't throw stuff in the back or take it out in weather. I'd eventually like to put it on autogas to make it more usable. I've been spoiled of late with my VW T4 returning around 30mpg. M/C? I was writing for Street Machine but had a bit of a do with Richard Nichols when he used a feature I had written word for word and said that he had had to re -write it even though he had not even contacted the owner. I was talking to Kev Elliot while having his diner at mine about it and he invited me to write for CC instead. Keith is a nice bloke and knowledgeable too. Sometimes I would have to contact other writers about stuff and used to talk on email to Keith Harman a lot. I was playing a gig in London last year and got talking to a bloke after the show and the conversation turned to hot rods some how and it turned out it was Keith. I have been on this site for a decade... and for some reason it just occurred to me to post here and say hi. I just moved to The Netherlands from the US. Sold my 50 1 ton the Great Pumpkin last week. But I am around still from time to time.
As we've been working in the Welcome Centre, it seems we have gotten more and more International Bolters. (We are also working on a decent description for this area, too. We've only gotten a globe so far. ) We've cleaned up a bunch of these posts and added images of the OP's truck(s).
Those who haven't checked in here, please do. All the stuff in the International Forum has been fun.
