For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 32 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 32 | Hey fellas i just wanted to reach out and ask a stupid question, my 59 viking is sitting in pieces in my garage and ive pulled most of the rats nest that was the wiring harnass. what i need is a barebones wiring getup that will just allow me to crank her and move it. my set up is a 327 sbc with points ignition and a coil. It does have an alternator but im not too concerned about that at the moment. I just want to be able to charge the battery and move her in and out of the garage as needed. Inside she has stock ignition power at the key but someone has added a push bottom start in the dash. I hope someone can oblige me and give me just the barebones startup wiring for this-thanks. Later i will buy a new harnass but weve got a little one on the way and money is tight. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy PatinaFiend, hook the positive battery terminal to the starter power in post, negative terminal to a good clean ground (a starter mounting bolt is an excellent choice). From the starter power input run a 14ga. or larger wire to the power terminal of the ignition switch. From the ignition switch ignition terminal (some switches have an "ign1" and an "ign2" terminal) I believe the one we want for your setup is "ign2", run a 16ga wire to the top terminal of a ballast resistor on the firewall. From the bottom terminal of the ballast resistor run a 16ga wire to the coil positive terminal. From the power terminal of the ignition switch run a 14ga wire to one side of the push button switch on the dash, from the other side of the push button switch run a 14ga wire down to the starter solenoid terminal closest to the engine block. From the other small solenoid terminal run a 16ga wire to the bottom terminal (to coil terminal) of the ballast resistor. If I haven't forgoten anything that should allow you to start, run, and shutoff the engine from inside the cab, if it's easier you can use all 14ga wire (bigger is better), hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 32 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2011 Posts: 32 | ah simplicity and common sense..thank you 3B | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,831 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,831 | Use the Ign. 1 terminal for normal running. Ign. 2 is for ballast resistor bypass during starting. It's not necessary for a quick temporary hookup. Jerry
