on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 14 | I have a 1950 3100 i have the Heidt's Mustang II kit with rack and pinion. I have never dealt with this type of steering and i was wondering how to hook the rack to the steering shaft from the steering column? I do not have any pieces, just the rack and havent decided on what steering column im going to use yet. any links would be greatly appreciated. Ive heard there is 3 pieces used to maneuver the shaft around everything to connect it to steering column.

I've also used junkyard parts, just look around till you see something usefull. A lot of this steering stuff is standard so it's not hard to find what you need used and mix and match.
For the column I'd use the original (and have), cut it off and install a bearing, the usual vendors sell it or you can buy a standard 3/4" ID bearing and turn your own adapter sleeve for the outside.

Like the guys say, parts are easy to come by,it just depends how deep your pockets are..... I went for Borgesson stainless steel but there are cheaper alternatives, here's how I did mine. This also links to other pics.

I had an old GM column but got rid of it and went with a 32'' ididit column, looks alot better. Just tell them what you have, for the column if the shaft is a double D or spline etc. your steering rack is mustang so if you have power it is a 3/4 36 spline or 9/16 26 spline for no power. they will match the joints. for getting the saft length right is a bit of work, they have a formula on the web site. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 576 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 576 | i have a 350 with cast iron manifolds a 75 chevy van column and a pacer rack and pinion...i was able two use two borgeson joints and a short piece of DD shaft.......dave 1949 Chevrolet 3100 "When this thing hits 88 miles an hour, you're going to see some serious sh%t." -Doc Brown

For mock up I used some 3/4" wooden dowel rod and cut it 'til I was happy, then cut the steel shafts to match. 1950 Chevy Advance Design 3100 in ScotlandIn the Stovebolt GalleryMore pix on Flickr. I had never seen the steering setups with the mustang 2 suspension and my frame i bought did not come with any of the steering parts but the rack. there is a Heidt's crossmember welded in but then it looks like stock mustang supension parts used. I really do not have any clue on how this suspension works or if it is even setup correctly on my truck frame. so i will definitely be looking at pictures people have of these setups.
