I have a full tank of fuel, good clean filter, fuel pump works fine, carb rebuilt by Holley 6mo ago. I have to pull the choke all the way out to get engine to run...if choke is off, engine shuts off. I'm guessing theres some trash in the carb, but wanted a second opinion before I pull it off and take it apart. With air cleaner off, can visibly see fuel squirt when throttle pedal moved. Where would my most likely place to start looking in carb? My vacuum line on the manifold goes to PCV valve and I have good vacuum there. The vacuum line off the carb goes to the vacuum advance and dash guage...vacuum advance is working when throttle moved and gauge shows good. With choke pulled out showing about 10 on vac guage, normally shows about 3-4 at idle with choke off.

They are real basic & simple. The first thing is to pull the top off the carb. There is a tube that runs across the top of the air horn. There is a small plug in one end of it like a tiny freeze plug. Sometimes that blows out of there & causes the very problem you are refering to. If you cant find the plug you can fill it in with JB weld or equivilent. If that is not it remove the idle jet & blow out all the passages. Make sure the float is not full of gas & check the float level. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Im going to check for intake manifold leak tonight after work, and I want to run it off a different fuel supply just to rule out bad fuel. And a call to Holley this a.m. to see what they suggest. ****Runs fine with choke out, and once choke pushed back in...shuts off. | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 | Just off the phone with Holley. Their tech says 1 of 3 things. Either mixture passage is blocked or has trash in it, intake manifold leak, or fouled plugs. Cleaned carb last night, so I don't think thats it. Put new plugs and pertronix in few weeks ago...I'll pull plugs to double check, and I'll do the old carb cleaner spray on intake tonight to check for leaks. Thats going to be my guess. The real fun will be pulling the integral manifold off this weekend if thats the cause. Doesn't look like its been off in a long time if ever. | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 321 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 321 | I am paying close attention to this one, I am so new to the straight 6's it isn't even funny. I hear that dealing with that intake can be a real pain.

The last one I did, I pulled the intake and exhaust as one piece. Nice thing is that the intake/exhaust gasket is one piece, and theres a gasket between the two manifolds also. Which i'm not haveing a problem with. I'll look at it real close, and if its good, I'll probably leave that one alone. I'll see how easy the bolts turn 1st. Going to be soaking everything down in pb blaster for a couple days and some good ol prayers. | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 | Ok, this weekend I repulled and rebuilt carb, new intake/exhaust gaskets, new fuel pump(under warrenty), new fuel/vacuum lines and still at the same problem. Intake came apart surprisingly easy...all bolts turned freely ( i had expected problems). The gasket looked fine with the exception of the #1 cylinder exhaust had a small leak. Everything else looks in place and running fine. Put an inline fuel pressure guage in and she holds 4psi consistent. Plan to take off carb tonight and swap float and needle just to rule it out. Only runs w/choke out. Any other help appreciated. | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 | Napa drop shipping carb kit, be here today...oh boy!! | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | I still think you are missing the plug in the discharge passage. I will e-mail you a photo of where to look. Give me an e-mail address. I dont know how to link to a photo album. You have this posted all over the place on this and another website, so I hope you see it. George

Have a new carb kit coming in today, so pics would def help. I have looked and can't find any open plugs. I have two spare carbs for parts, and I've been using them for reference to try and locate any missing plugs. | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | You say you have some spare carbs. Why not spif one of those up & try it. You have enough parts laying around now & you can probably work on one blindfolded. Have you removed the idle jet & blown all the passages out with comp. air? Take a tag wire & poke in the passages. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Ive been through the carb twice and my buddy went through it last night. Was 9pm by time he was done and its dark here at 5:30. Im going to put the carb on tonight, and if the problem persists, then Im going to build one out of the 3 parts carbs I have. Keep you updated. | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 321 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 321 | Jon, did you get anything figured out with the carb?

Have pressed it back in and its holding fine. Dont know if it'll happen again, if it does than Ill probably have to put a new top on the carb. | | | | Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 321 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2008 Posts: 321 | Wow, that's interesting. One of those oddball things. Hope it holds up for you but most of all glad to hear you got it figured out.
