I am replacing all the glass in my 51 5 window. there all in except the door and vent windows. I spent all day today trying to figure out how they go in, I know I,m doing some minor thing wrong, I have read and re read the shop manual http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm0101.htm
and it seams pretty straight forward. Everything seems to fit well till I try to install the vent window assembly.I was hoping someone will have some tips for me.

... The FIRST time I put mine in it was a little tough. After pulling it back out a couple times for unrelated reasons, I got to where I could drop it in pretty good.
Patience is the best advice. I will admit I read the "instructions" about 4 times just to get it in my head clear. Do you have a specific point at which you have the problem. That may help us to help you..... once its sitting down in the door its a little bit of a pain to get up inside the door to put the bolt in the leg of the assembly.

Just finished installing vent windows and rollup windows in both doors in my '55 1st series. There are a couple web sites listed below that were real helpful. I agree patience is a virtue in the process. Good luck.

Re-installing the vent window assembly always seems to be the trickiest bit!
When I was replacing my cracked door windows and reassembling everything, the vent window assembly always seemed to catch on the drip rail before sliding in. Just be patient and work it in.

Mask the window opening so you don't scratch the finish.

Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions. I still cant get the vent windows in, I can usually figure just about anything out but this has be baffled. either the lower part of the vent window hits the spring on the window regulator or the upper part of the vent window hits the window channel and wont slide down the window glass straight.

John -

I did the vent assemblies on my '54 3100 recently. One of the assemblies almost fell into place. The other was a bear. The door that was difficult had been wrecked and repaired somewhere along the way. Possibly, the opening between the outer skin and the inner skin of the door was a little smaller (?).

You seem to be saying that you are trying to slide the vertical bar down against the window glass. That won't work. You must insert the assembly at an angle tilted toward the latch side of the door with only a corner of the window glass in the vertical track. Then rotate it into place, overlapping more of the window glass as you get the assembly into place. The window glass is pretty tough, but you could crack it if you manhandle it too hard.

Admission of guilt: I installed the assembly into the "troublesome" door, but I don't know what I did. It just finally went it. Maybe I was holding my tongue a little differently!
