I looked at various older posts regarding 3speed floor shifter installs. I didn't find many that reported the results. I was hoping to get some feedback about such installs. Especially regarding the Mr. Gasket universal shifter and any Hurst installs. My trans is a 1960s 3 speed OD 1st gear synchro
Saginaw (7 bolts).

The shifter part of a universal will work, but the mounting will have to be fabricated to clear the solenoid. Occasionally a NOS Hurst for a 65 Chev or thereabouts will hit eBay. The shifter will wind up very close to the seat. Back when these thing were common, we used to turn the stick around to clear the seat.

I'm leaning toward a Hurst, but it seems the universal one may be OK. Its a difference between $65 for the universal or $320 for the Hurst. I hope to find the value in the anticipated reliability of the Hurst shifter.

The universal shifter is ok and it will work. The Hurst shifter will be much tighter and have a better feel. Another difference I have found is the universal shifts don't have stops and the Hurst shifters do have stops to adjust to your not pushing against the shifter forks. Take a look at both if possible, then decide. Good Luck Don

I'm convinced: bought the Hurst Shifter from Summit today. For anybody who has an interest, the following is a copy of the email I got from them (remember my application is a 1957 Chevy truck, synchro 343 Saginaw trans with 7 bolt side cover):

Hurst has two options for you;

HUU-3667271 shifter and HUU-3670010 installation kit. It is listed for a Chevelle but it will work with your transmission and the stick has a big bend for seat clearance.

HUU-5010002 is your second option. It is the Indy SSA shifter for the 3 speed and has a slightly bent stick for the seat.
