The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Issue with replacement oversize hinge pins

Folks - I've been working on Matilda in fits and starts; I drilled out the old door hinge pins. The new, oversize pins from LMC have knurling just under the head of the pin. I drilled out the cast portion of the hinge (the "door" side) but the replacement pins are well over 1" too long and the knurling under the head will grab the hole in the "body" side of the hinge, making it inoperable. What gives? Both LMC and American Classic have the same style/size oversize pin. I called LMC and they said to take the truck to a Chevy Dealer.... Lordy.... Have any of you used these specific pins? My hinge bodies have wallered out holes in the "body" side, so I expect I'll need to weld those closed and redrill them. I'd appreciate any info or guidance....

Im actually gonna try to rebuild mine with some pins from classic trucks this evening.. Look in the tech tips for door hinge rebuild.. Very good write up

I suppose it the pins are too long, cut the ends off. IF the knurled part is too long, grind it smooth.

I got mine rebuilt a few nights ago.. Went fairly smooth.. the knurled part on mine was the right length.. they were too long so i cut them off with a cut off saw and use a ball peen hammer to mushroom the ends.. just use a bench or die grinder and smooth the excess knurled portion off.

I rebuilt my hinge pins, but it ended up that the holes were too deformed. Never could get a good door alignment. I couldn't get get rid of the "up & down" play. A little play at the hinge end manifests itself as a fairly significant amount at the door lock end. I ended up buying a new hinges. It would have been better to do that in the first place, everything seems tight now - no play.
