Anyone know if the 2 steel washers in this drawing are available anywhere?

...pic...

My truck is a 1950 1/2 ton.
I have a leak at that retainer. I have a seal kit to repair but suspect I’m missing the 2 steel washers. I would like to have 2 on hand before I tear it down.

If they are not available from the vendors if someone who has one torn apart can give me the dimensions I’ll get 2 fabbed up.

Thank you

Gus,

Very nice illustration.

I have never seen those steel washers for sale as new/reproduction. Try a Parts Wanted ad in the Swap Meet.

If someone would measure the inner and outer diameter (I have none in the open to measure), you could check McMaster-Carr and/or Fastenal to see if they have something.

By the way, in most of the tail-pieces that I have taken apart, there was a rubber seal not a felt seal. What is the seal-material in the gasket set you have?

Good luck,

The seal kit I have came with a cork gasket for the Ball Collar.

The seal at the torque tube is more like a quad ring, its tan in color and looks like rubber impregnated with cork.

I was under the truck this afternoon and slipped the collar back on the torque tube. I could see the seal turning and no steel washer.

I’ll try posting in parts wanted. Maybe someone who upgraded might have 2, or be able to give me dimensions.
Thanks

Are you also getting a leak at the cork seal between the bell and the collar?

Yes
...leak one...
...leak two...

Im still figuring out the procedure to repair this.

I believe... I remove the ball collar, Disassemble the u-joint. Then Ill be able to remove the old seals and install new.

Sound correct?

I have a torque tube rear end from a 1953 Powerglide car available. If the gland nut and the ball coupler are the same size, I can give you some measurements from it.

If you can tell me OD. ID. And thickness that would help. I can bounce that against the new seal dimensions from the fel-pro kit

I don't know if the car and 1/2 truck are same.

Thank you

I have a 4 spd w/torque tube. Washer dimensions are 59mm(OD) x 52mm(ID)x 2mm thick. I too was missing them when I got my truck in 87 but was able to get used ones from a parts supplier at the time. The washer fits a little loosely in the cap and of course must just slip over the end of the torque tube.

Thanks for measurements

Now comes the hard part. I'll see what I can come up with

I had no luck finding the tube washers and had the bell shims made. { 1/16 - 1/32} The composition 1/16 work well on the bell clearance. {pic 4}If you have the felt seal,{pic 5} you may solve your leak problem if the ID is not excessive.

Yes, that sounds/looks to be correct.
Follow the adjustment procedure in the Truck Shop Manual - it is fairly clear and works fine.

Thanks for the Link Tim that will help.

I really lucked out as a fellow stovebolter was able to find two steel shims for me
...pic...

It turns out stovebolter Forty9 had one extra set; I actually got to meet him which was the best part of the deal. He was kind enough to look at my bolt and give me some real good pointers.

Now I’m ready to try to stop this leak. Now that I’m driving the 50 to work it will be good to minimize the witness mark I leave on the ground. Repair scheduled for my next day off!

Thanks to all who responded and special thanks to Forty9, It was a real pleasure meeting you. I appreciate you taking time to explain the torque tube and u joint disassembly.

My beast is doing a "leak two" big time. Maybe I'll get off my butt and get it resolved.
