I'm considering getting a 1955 Chevy 6400 from my grandfather but I found one dillema. The sterio is gone and I can not find an antenna, the hole, or the stub for one on the fenders or anywhere else on the truck. Where would I look for this stub? Did you just wrap a coat hanger around the radio and mirror?

do you think a farmer would spend an extra $63 for an optional radio in his work truck?
do you really think an antenna would have been standard equipment in '55?

I looked inside and there is a slot in the center of the dash with two holes on either side that appear to be for knobs, and yes, there is a speaker in each door. See photobucket pics. the dash provision for a radio is standard, and standard it has "blanking plates" [sometimes called 'deletes'] in them, there were no door mounted speakers in the trucks we deal with here

If I was to get a radio and install it, would the antenna go on the fender? I am thinking of getting an antenna with its base and installing it on the truck. Should I put it on the headache rack, the fender, the end of the front bumper, or somewhere else?

The original antenna mounted on the passenger's side{right] fender, I have an original installation instruction, I believe if you buy a good reproduction antenna it with have the instructions and a templet, the original speaker was mounted in a box above the windshield between the sun visors, the speaker wire was run down the inside windshield post, under the dash to the radio

Yes,in the 1957 accsesory installation manual, there is a drawing of the cab and speaker ,in the Chevrolet radio manual there is a picture of the radio and speaker ,the speaker housing was being reproduced, Check JIM CARTER's catolog, I have these pictures if you cann't find it anywhere else

Here's a pic of the speaker location. You might be able to tell in the pic that there are 2 speakers in the housing. Factory would only have a single speaker.

If you are asking about ideas on where to put a speaker, that is your imagination. There is no limitation or any technical reason why a speaker can't be located in many other locations in the cab.

I went and looked at the truck today, and there was a speaker between the visors! You know what they say though, people seldom look up! I guess the radio broke and the previos owner took out the radio and was not able to get around to putting in the new one. I guess I just didn't see the hole for the antenna on the fender. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Does anyone else have any tips, info, or advice?

I went out there yesterday, got some pics, and here is the speaker pic, and the fender hole pic. Can't believe I missed that!
