Hi guys. I have a stock 235 in my 59 apache with 4 on the floor and 3.38 rear. I have been looking at Clifford Performance Header/intake/Weber kit as they claim more power and better mpg with this set up. Anyone here have it on there bolt? At over $1200.00 for the kit I would just like to hear any pros or cons before I put down that kind of money. If you have used them or know any info either way on this setup please speak up. Here is the link for the one I'm talking about. http://www.cliffordperformance.net/...roduct_Code=C-235&Category_Code=C235

from what I have heard it is wonderful, I would have used it if I had known then what I know now. I would have went with the 4 barrel set up. But it is basically the same.

I don't have this particular set-up but have the same equipment albeit in other brands. Headers are Fenton, intake is Offy, carbs are Holley Weber, linkage and air cleaners are Stovebolt Engine Co. and cam is Howards. I don't have or need a fuel regulator. These things will enhance performanace but don't expect miracles. The real power gains for Stovebolt come from a crossflow head or a seriously reworked head. Crossflow heads are virtually non-existant and very, very costly. The kits will make your engine sound and look good. A good cam will help but there isn't a lot to be gained. I have no idea what my cost was for the items so I can't say if it's competitive or not. You can source all these things form many of the popular suppliers. A lot of us have done this.

What is a crossflow head? Was this an aftermarket thing?

the crossflow head is a wayne most likely, a couple of other people made them as well, but you will most likely never have one if you don't already. I did find one for sale a while back for $15,000 (fifteen thousand, there was no typo there) although it did have intake, exhaust, and carburetors. We all dream of having one but only a few actually get one.....

Kurt 51...it is a head that has the intake and exhaust ports on opposite sides instead of the same side like our Stovebolts do. It allows for much improved breathing and hence much improved performance.

What did you gain from having done it? Mpg's and power as offered or a smoother end result without these gains? Just wondering as I can understand a nicer end result with respect to tuneing and maintenance but I'm really wondering about mpg and power for my bolt.

Sorry my truck is not on the road yet. I did run the engine with O2 sensors on both exhaust and Air fuel ratio is right on the money @ 13.

Josh,

I don't know how well it represents the Clifford setup, but here are my measured results of using a Corvette exhaust manifold with a pair of 22" Smithy mufflers.
dyno results

I don't know about mileage -- I didn't drive it enough before I changed. Now it seems to get about 15mpg running E10 fuel.

Leon

I have a 54/3100/235 with fenton headers and offy manifold, dual Rochester's and dual flowmaster 40's. i have a 2.73 nova rear end and 235/75/15 tires on rear. i get 15.5 around town and have gotten as high as 24 mpg on a long trip. my average on a trip to KC in Sept. was 17 mpg down from and average of 20 last year. i also installed E3 spark plugs and my in town mpg went up 25% to the 15.5 average. Btw i have t-5 tranny from an s10.

if you are going to drive one of these trucks, and you are worried about fuel economy, you will be disappointed they don't get very good mileage. Not to mention, they don't really make a lot of power, but they are sure cool. I do have to qualify this statement by saying I don't consider 25 MPG very good mileage, I am pretty upset my Yaris only gets 35 MPG. And someone is nearly assuredly going to disagree with the statement of not much power, but with the amount of money I have put in my engine to hopefully get 150 HP, I could probably get 500 HP out of a 350 chevy. But it is all a matter of what YOU want. Besides a crate motor is blasphemy to me in one of these trucks, but there again that is MY opinion.

Not worried about fuel economy as I love my truck as it is. I just want to know if someone offers a product and claims better mpg and more power that it does just that. Otherwise I can throw the money in the fireplace with the same result. Thanks everyone for your replies as they have helped me sort out my thoughts with this set up.

yeah me too, I just got my fentons on this weekend, have an appointment next saturday for exhaust. The fella is doing it for $300 since restoring old chevy trucks is also his hobby. I have a edelbrock dual manifold I am going to use on the new engine, but if I had known then what I know now I would have used the clifford setup with a 390cfm holley 4 barrel. But it is way too far into the game now. I had to make special adapter sleeves for the intake with an extra 1/2" length to not run into the headers.
