A friend had a couple strips of peel and seal so I tried it on the inside back of my cab with poor results. I bit the bullet and ordered a box of Eastwood's Thermo Coustic sound deadener while wondering if I was wasting my money.

I love this stuff!

Before: http://s891.photobucket.com/albums/...ck/?action=view&current=IMGP1271.mp4

After one piece: http://s891.photobucket.com/albums/...ck/?action=view&current=IMGP1272.mp4

Passenger door before: http://s891.photobucket.com/albums/...ck/?action=view&current=IMGP1274.mp4

Passenger door with one piece cut into smaller pieces to fit through the holes in the door: http://s891.photobucket.com/albums/...ck/?action=view&current=IMGP1275.mp4

I need to buy another box of Thermo Coutic to do the back of the cab and under the seat. I covered the floor from the seat forward and up the firewall and the kickpanels. I even put some scrap pieces on the back side of the dash. On my first test run of the sound deadener today, I got rained on. Then it turned to hail. The hail was quieter than the rain used to be.

How thick is that stuff?

I had roll of peel n seal that I would agree was marginal. I went back to the big box home store and this time they had some different stuff that was roughly twice as thick but more importantly the aluminum foil backing was seemingly twice as thick as well, which probably has a bigger impact. I'll try to measure later and update.

Edited - The "peel n seal" I used is .045"

The box says it measures .070", so it's basicly 1/16 of an inch. That's not very thick, but the difference is amazing. The aluminum is thick enough that you will want to wear gloves or it will cut pretty easy.

I decided it would be worth it to spend the money on something that I don't have to worry about coming down on my head in the heat. Peel n seal seems to melt in the heat too easy.

If I had lots of money, I would double up on the Thermo coustic.

I used this http://tapes.berryplastics.com/SearchProductsDetails.aspx?ID=131

I have done some research on sound dampening tapes. What I found was that most are made from foil and butyl rubber or asphalt. They can also be a combination of butyl and asphalt. Asphalt is less expensive, doesn't work as well, has a more narrow temperature window and gives of smelly fumes.

When you look below the surface and marketing fluff most of these tapes are products used in manufacturing so they are built to a spec and have a cost benefit trade off for the various types of materials used. They are then branded with the various trade names (Dynomat, fatmat, second skin, lizard skin, eastwood ect) and marketed to people like us.

My advise would be to look for a local "tape store". They specialize in adhesives for industrial applications. I don't know if I am lucky or what but I have three within a half hour of my house. Talk to them and explain you want low VOC foil tape with a high butyl content. They sell it in various thicknesses for different applications. I think Dynomat is 68mm.

What I did get 35mm and then double up in the higher heat higher noise areas. Ultimately it was about half the price of going with any of the second tier brands (non-dynomat).
