If I give the gas pedal a swift kick it slows down to a good slow idle. In the throttle linkage there is noticeable free play at two places: the bell crank is loose on its shaft, and the lever on the throttle shaft is also loose. Should I aim to rebuild these? Would a stronger return spring help? I'd welcome any suggestions | | |

Make sure the accelerator rod is not binding and the bell crank is free and lubed. Also check that the pedal hinge it self with the rod disconnected is not dry and binding.
And if the there is excess wear in the linkage it should probaly be replaced or repaired. | | |

This is probably causing the problem. Sometimes you have to dissasemble the carb & braze the shaft to the lever. The bell crank can also be welded to remove the slack.
