I'm new to the forum and just bought a 1949 3/4 Chevy pickup. I'm trying to identify the engine but can't find corresponding numbers in the published lists. The number on the passenger side of the engine is B45 848 850 and on the driver's side is 8866 848 GM4. Can anyone help me identify the engine and year? Thx.

Agree on the web site...its a good one. The engine number is on the flat spot immediately to the rear of the distributor.

Thanks, and that number is F0201B but I can't find out if it's the original engine or from another year and if so which one. I checked the link given by GIJOE but don't see any way to find that information on that website. Any suggestions?

According to the serial number you've posted, it's a '57-'60 Passenger 235 originally used with a Powerglide. It could possibly be a '61 or '62, my source stops at '60 for Passenger engines. There should be a date code cast on the passenger side of the block, near the starter.

F0201B could also be from 1961 or 1962

The date casting codes for block & head are shown here. That link is for truck engines but maybe the locations on car engines are the same.
