Working today on chevy 2.8L. The crankshaft broke in half and the new one is in. How do I know when the crank's nose gear for the timing chain is on deep enough? I took it apart a while ago and don't remember. Without the woodruff key, it will bottom out on the crank. Any ideas? Timing chain seems to be flat against a guide flange, but the gear looks a smidge cocked. Key is in and I'm hesitant to try and drive it on further.

Did you heat the gear before installing it? Get it just hot enough to need a welder's glove to handle it, and it will slip on all the way to the bottom without hammering on it at all. Too late now, I know, but you might consider pulling it back off and cleaning up any burrs the hammer job created, then heat it with a Propane torch.

It's poped off. Going to get new keys and will try some heat.

Thanks,

Read some other forums and most said 20 to 30 minutes in the oven at 300F, so that's what I did and drove to down with the balancer bolt, 2" long PVC coupler and a washer big enough to fit the PVC. Worked perfect, no beat, no tap. Got a new chain and gear set too. Old had too much slack.

Thanks!!!
