| | | | Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 35 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2010 Posts: 35 | I just removed the heads from my 55 265 v8. The lifters will come only part way up then are stuck. I ordered a slide hammer tool but it seems too small to catch inside the lifter to pull it out. Any suggestions?

The camshaft will be worn out also. Sometimes it's necessary to pull the engine, remove the crankshaft, and drive the lifters out from the bottom side with a hammer and punch. Don't even think about changing only the lifters, and if you change tha cam and lifters, you'll end up with the same problems the 55's had 50 years ago, low oil pressure due to lots of oil loss from worn cam bearings. As soon as the 55's got a few miles on them, Dad found out that it was not a good idea to attempt an in-the-frame rebuild like he had been doing for years with the 6-cylinders. A small block V-8 with over 50,000 miles on it MUST have new cam bearings on an overhaul.

| | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 117 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 117 | Happened to me and it was crud built up on the bottom of the lifter body where it didn't enter the lifter bore, probable the last quarter inch. I agree that the best way is knocking them out from the bottom. If you are in a pinch you can make some "soft jaw pliers". Take a pair of channel locks or better yet, vice grips, wrap the jaws with tape or put some rubber hose over the jaws and lock on. Obviously you need to be careful since the lifter could be ruined if they slip or cut through the soft jaws. Sometimes locking on and hitting the pliers with a hammer helps.
I know it's hoky But it can get you out of a pinch if need be.

It came with a small weighted hammer that was not enough to budge the lifters so I took it apart and put a lager hammer from a dent puller on it and they came right out. I couldn't get any of the lifters out. I soaked them with some Kroil, and about half an hour later, bingo! They had a carbon ring built up on them, wouldn't come out for the life of me.
