My 57 has acquired a new problem. When shifting into and out of third gear, there is a slight grind for a small portion of the lever travel. It is no where near as bad as the grinding is if you try to shift into unsynchronized first at a reasonable speed (over 5 mph lol).

I assume the tranny is the original, however it could be the original mate to the 65ish 283.

What could be wearing out and causing this? It doesn't happen every time, and it does not seem to be particularly connected to high rpm or low rpm shifts

providing it's not that your clutch needs adjusting, the syncros are probably getting worn .... there is no 'reasonable speed' for downshifting into 1st without double clutching - learn to double clutch well and use that for any shifting up or down, or get on with overhauling the trans

After several tries on multiple test drives, double clutching worked great to get into third without grinding the gear. First, however was a different story. Whether I just double clutched or added rpms when it was in neutral, it still would not go into gear.

Ideas?

quit trying to do something there's no need for? while it is possible to do it, there really is no reason to downshift to 1st, you should be going slow enough for brakes to finish the job, yet still accelerate away in 2nd with a 283 if you don't need to come to a full stop .... you could also look for a 68+ 3 speed, they have a syncro 1st and pretty much bolt right in

That is what I have been doing, obviously. But I was just wondering if my situation was a telltale symptom of something bad. Yes, I will continue to do as I do.

not a symptom of anything, normal operation, that's why they eventually added a syncro to 1st ... the newer all syncro 3 speeds are worth watching for, the easy identifier is a finer spline output shaft, so it's good to get the yoke with the trans
